The global production and disposal of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) continue to increase, intensifying the need for sustainable valorization pathways that move beyond landfilling and incineration. Pyrolysis offers a promising route to convert waste PET into char, wax, and gas, yet prior studies have focused primarily on gaseous products while overlooking the potential of PET-derived char. This thesis addresses this gap by (i) developing high-performance PET-derived adsorbents for aqueous micropollutant removal, (ii) elucidating the temperature-dependent structural evolution of PET char, and (iii) systematically evaluating how activation processes determine char physicochemical properties. Together, these findings establish PET as a viable feedstock for producing tunable, high-value carbon materials.
The first part of this work demonstrates that PET-derived char can be upcycled into activated carbon with performance exceeding that of a commercial coal-based PAC. PET was converted into adsorbents through pyrolysis (450–800 °C), activation with KOH or K2CO3, and optional hydrogen post-treatment to reduce oxygen content and shift surface charge toward neutral. These materials were evaluated for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and pesticides in both deionized (DIW) and real waters collected from drinking-water and sewage-treatment plants. A KOH-activated, hydrogen-treated PET adsorbent synthesized at 800 °C removed >97% PFAS and >99% PPCPs/pesticides in DIW and achieved 95% of total removal within 252 min, far outperforming Calgon PAC. In real waters, the same adsorbent retained superior PPCP/pesticide removal due to its high specific surface area (SSA), while a K2CO3-activated, hydrogen-treated material achieved higher PFAS removal because its abundant mesopores mitigated dissolved-organic-matter (DOM) pore blocking.
Tailored physicochemical modification enabled clear identification of governing adsorption parameters for each micropollutant class. In DIW, PFAS adsorption was governed by low oxygen content and near-neutral surface charge, whereas PPCPs and pesticides were controlled primarily by SSA. In real waters, mesoporosity became the dominant factor for PFAS removal due to competitive DOM interactions, whereas PPCPs and pesticides still favored microporous, high-SSA adsorbents. These results validated PET as a consistent and tunable precursor for activated carbon and provided a practical design framework for selecting activation routes based on micropollutant groups and water matrices.
The second part of this thesis establishes the structural evolution of PET-derived char during pyrolysis between 450 and 900 °C. PET decomposed through random scission of ester linkages and aliphatic segments, forming waxes rich in terephthalic-acid-type compounds and gases including CO2, CO, CH4, and aldehydes. Between 450 and 600 °C, rapid loss of oxygen-containing functional groups and aliphatic chains generated extensive microporosity. Above 600 °C, hydrogen removal and progressive polyaromatic condensation caused densification and partial pore collapse. Residual aliphatic linkages persisted between aromatic clusters even at 900 °C. This persistence contradicts previously proposed graphene-like models and instead supports a defect-rich, partially condensed aromatic structure.
The final part systematically investigates how activation processes—cation/anion identity, activation sequence, and washing conditions—shape PET-derived char properties. KOH and NaOH acted as chemical activators, generating metallic alkali intermediates; KOH produced substantial microporosity due to efficient K intercalation, whereas NaOH produced fewer micropores because metallic Na intercalates poorly and molten Na2CO3 collapses pores at high temperatures. In contrast, Mg(OH)2 and Ca(OH)2 served as hard templates, decomposing to MgO, CaO, and CaCO3 and creating meso/macropores upon removal. Among anions, CO32- enabled the strongest activation, whereas SO42- yielded minimal structural change. Activation sequence strongly influenced pore development: one-step activation (via molten PET) produced thin carbon matrices with a wide pore-size distribution, whereas two-step activation of rigid char precursors yielded predominantly microporous structures. Post-activation HCl washing effectively removed residual inorganic species, reopened blocked pores, and maximized accessible surface area without altering the carbon framework. A spider-chart comparison of normalized physicochemical properties provides guidance on selecting activating agents for desired applications.
Overall, this thesis establishes a comprehensive mechanistic framework that links PET pyrolysis, activation chemistry, and physicochemical property development. It demonstrates that waste PET can be converted into tunable, high-performing carbonaceous materials suitable for micropollutant removal and other advanced applications. This work elucidates adsorption performance-physicochemical property relationships, establishes structural evolution models, and evaluates activation routes. These advances lay the foundation for rational design, scalable production, and broader utilization of PET-derived chars in environmental and technological systems.
