This dissertation presents a coupled aerodynamic-aeroacoustic analysis framework to investigate the influence of yaw-control-induced partial wakes on the unsteady aerodynamic and noise characteristics of downstream wind turbines. The framework integrates the Curl wake model implemented in FLOw Redirection and Induction in Steady-state (FLORIS), the Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method (UVLM), and the Brooks-Pope-Marcolini (BPM) trailing-edge noise model to enable time-resolved simulations under spatially non-uniform inflow conditions caused by yaw misalignment. Validation against large-eddy simulation (LES) data and field measurements demonstrated that the coupled model accurately captures both wake deflection and deformation, as well as the dominant spectral characteristics of trailing-edge noise.
The Curl model was calibrated to LES data and successfully reproduced the key features of yawed turbine wakes under stable (SBL) and neutral (NBL) atmospheric boundary layer conditions, showing good agreement with LES results in terms of wake deficit and center displacement. The results revealed that wake rotation induces asymmetric deflection depending on yaw direction, with stronger lateral shifts under positive yaw and deeper wake cores under negative yaw, effects that become more pronounced under SBL due to reduced turbulent mixing. A two-dimensional skewness analysis quantitatively confirmed that downstream inflow asymmetry intensifies with yaw magnitude.
Unsteady aerodynamic analyses using UVLM showed that aerodynamic load fluctuations, represented by the effective angle of attack (AOAEFF) and root flapwise bending moment (RFBM), increased with yaw magnitude - more significantly under SBL and negative yaw. These findings indicate that enhanced inflow asymmetry can amplify the unsteady loading of downstream turbines, implying greater fatigue risk during wake steering operation.
Coupled acoustic analyses based on the BPM formulation revealed that downstream turbines experienced lower overall sound pressure levels (OASPL) due to wake deficits but exhibited a slight OASPL increase with yaw magnitude, particularly for positive yaw. The trailing-edge noise directivity exhibited clear lateral asymmetry consistent with wake deflection direction, and convective amplification effects associated with rotor rotation led to higher noise on the left side even at zero yaw. Furthermore, amplitude modulation (AM) analysis showed that AM strength was highest in the crosswind direction and varied nonlinearly with yaw angle. The variation in AM strength was most pronounced in the direction where the turbine blades move downward, and a substantial increase in AM strength was observed under positive moderate yaw conditions under stable atmospheric condition. Blade-resolved analysis demonstrated that AM behavior is jointly governed by rotational convective amplification and non-uniform inflow distribution.
Overall, this study elucidates the coupled aerodynamic and aeroacoustic mechanisms linking yaw-induced wake asymmetry, unsteady loading, and acoustic modulation in multi-turbine systems. The findings suggest that while wake steering can improve wind-farm power efficiency, it may also intensify unsteady aerodynamic and acoustic phenomena in downstream turbines, depending on yaw direction and atmospheric stability.
