According to our understanding of galaxy formation, galaxies are generally accompanied with dark matter. This means that galaxy formation and evolution are closely linked to the host dark matter halos where galaxies are embedded. Advancement in observations, instrumentation and simulations enable us to investigate the galaxy properties and the connection with dark matter in detail. This thesis focuses on understanding the connection between galaxy and dark matter from the dwarf galaxies to the large–scale structures using observations and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. This thesis is composed of three main projects, listed as follows.
First, I investigate the redshift evolution of intrinsic alignments of the shapes of galaxies and dark matter subhalos with the large–scale structures in the universe using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, Horizon Run 5. To this end, early–type galaxies are selected from the simulated galaxy catalogs based on stellar mass and kinematic morphology. I measure the shapes and orientations of galaxies and dark matter subhalos. I estimate the misalignment between them and find that they are aligned with each other over time. I analyze the two–point correlation between galaxy or dark matter subhalo shapes and the large-scale density field and quantify the amplitude from z = 0.625 to z = 2.5. I find that the amplitude for galaxies remains largely constant with redshift, whereas dark matter subhalos exhibits redshift evolution that deviates from zero at a significance level exceeding 3𝜎. Notably, the results are broadly consistent with existing observational constraints. These findings are in good agreement with previous results of other cosmological simulations.
Second, I explore dark matter–deficient galaxies (DMDGs) using the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. I define DMDGs as systems with a dark matter–to–stellar mass ratio below unity and find two formation channels. In the first, galaxies that initially form within massive dark matter halos lose the majority of their dark matter and transition into DMDGs. In the second, galaxies form with little or no dark matter from the beginning. DMDGs originated within massive dark matter halos exhibit significant variations with time in mass, size, and kinematics, whereas those formed with little dark matter show mild evolution. The former population tends to form closer to their nearest neighbor galaxies in large–scale dense regions than the latter. These results support at least two distinct pathways to make galaxies dark matter–deficient.
Finally, I examine whether the kinematics of dwarf galaxies can be explained by Verlinde's emergent gravity. For this goal, I compile the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of 30 dwarf galaxies in the Local Group from the literature. I predict the gravitational acceleration from the stellar component within the emergent gravity and compare it with that from observations. The prediction with the emergent gravity show an agreement with the observation within the uncertainty. These results suggest that the emergent gravity can explain the galactic kinematics without introducing dark matter, even for less massive galaxies where dark matter is generally expected to dominate. This stands in sharp contrast to MOND, which requires a new interpolating function for dwarf galaxies to explain their kinematics without dark matter.
These projects offer complementary perspectives on the galaxy–dark matter connection: (1) the redshift evolution of the intrinsic alignment representing the imprint of the growth of large–scale structures of dark matter to galaxy, (2) the impact of the absence of dark matter in galaxy formation and evolution by exploring dark matter–deficient galaxies, and (3) understanding the kinematics of dark matter-dominated systems within alternative gravitational theory instead of dark matter. Taken together, our results advance our understanding for the connection between galaxy and dark matter in the Universe.
