Global warming, accelerated by the extensive use of fossil fuels, has led to increasingly severe abnormal climate phenomena. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, data centers, and electric vehicles has caused a steep rise in the demand for electrical energy. However, more than half of the produced energy is still dissipated as waste heat, resulting in substantial energy loss. These issues, combined with the depletion of fossil fuels, underscore the urgent need for the development of alternative renewable energy technologies. Thermoelectric (TE) technology, which directly converts waste heat into electrical energy, has emerged as an environmentally friendly power generation method capable of addressing these global energy and environmental challenges. The practical implementation of thermoelectric technology requires materials with high conversion efficiency. This dissertation focuses on strategies to enhance the thermoelectric performance of tin selenide (SnSe), one of the most promising thermoelectric materials.
First, a hierarchical chemical and structural engineering strategy was developed by integrating Ge alloying, Na and Ta doping, and post-treatment processes including mechanical ball milling and H₂ reduction refining. Na doping increased the carrier concentration to approximately 1019cm-3, and subsequent Ge substitution at the Sn site slightly reduced the hole concentration while suppressing lattice thermal transport through mass fluctuation and strain field scattering. As a result, a figure of merit (ZT) of ~1.4 was achieved at 800 K. Further Ta doping induced the formation of microscale TaSe2 precipitates within the SnSe matrix, which enhanced carrier mobility and introduced additional phonon scattering centers. Consequently, the power factor increased, and the thermal conductivity decreased, yielding a ZT of ~ 1.5 at 800 K. Microstructural optimization through ball milling and H₂ reduction refined the TaSe2 precipitates to the nanoscale and effectively removed surface oxides, leading to a significant reduction in lattice thermal conductivity at high temperatures. The optimized sample exhibited an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ~ 0.13 W m-1K-1 and a remarkable ZT of ~2.1 at 800 K. These results demonstrate that simultaneous hierarchical control of chemical composition and microstructure is an effective approach to decouple charge and phonon transport for high-performance thermoelectric materials.
Second, a multiscale defect engineering strategy was proposed to minimize lattice thermal transport in polycrystalline Na-doped SnSe by the controlled introduction of defects. Detailed structural analysis revealed the coexistence of hierarchical phonon scattering sources including atomic scale Sn asymmetry, nanoscale AgSnSe2 precipitates, and microscale dislocations and grain boundaries—that collectively induced glass-like phonon transport behavior. The optimized sample achieved an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.02 W m-1K-1 and an outstanding maximum ZT of ~3.0 at 800 K, originating from the synergistic enhancement of the power factor and suppression of phonon transport. Low temperature thermal transport measurements and Debye–Callaway modeling further confirmed that point defect and nanoprecipitate scattering play dominant roles in phonon relaxation. These findings highlight that the precise control of structural imperfections from the atomic to the microscale is a highly effective route to realizing superior thermoelectric performance in polycrystalline SnSe.
Finally, the recent breakthroughs in polycrystalline SnSe-based materials represent one of the most remarkable milestones in the history of thermoelectric research. These materials exhibit an exceptional peak ZT of 3.1 at 783 K and an average ZT of ~2.0 over the range of 400-783 K, marking the highest performance among all bulk thermoelectric systems. This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in SnSe thermoelectrics and discusses how these achievements are fundamentally transforming the research and application paradigms of thermoelectric technology.
