The transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy and the mitigation of anthropogenic carbon emissions requires efficient, scalable, and durable electrochemical systems for water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the widespread implementation of these technologies is currently hindered by the lack of electrocatalysts that can simultaneously offer high intrinsic activity, product selectivity, and long-term stability under harsh industrial conditions. This dissertation, titled "Tailored Electrocatalysts for Efficient and Selective Water and CO2 Electrolysis Toward Sustainable Fuel Production," addresses these challenges through the rational design of advanced catalyst architectures, specifically focusing on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and encapsulated metal nanoparticles. First, this study investigates the enhancement of oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) performance in 2D metal-organic frameworks via a novel nitrogen-ion-beam sputtering (NIBS) technique. A nickel-naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid MOF (NiNDC) was synthesized and subjected to NIBS, which introduced tunable nitrogen functionalities—pyridinic, pyrrolic, and graphitic N—into the organic linkers without damaging the underlying crystallinity. By optimizing the accelerating potential to 1.2 kV, the ratio of catalytically active pyridinic N and conductive graphitic N was maximized. This tailored electronic environment resulted in a catalyst with a low overpotential of 222 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and exceptional stability for more than 120 hours, significantly outperforming pristine MOFs and commercial IrOX. Second, the research extends to the highly corrosive environment of direct seawater electrolysis. A compositionally complex, high-entropy-inspired MOF (HE-MOF) comprising Ni, Fe, Co, and Zn was developed to suppress the parasitic chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR). The high-entropy design induced severe lattice distortion and metal vacancies, creating negatively charged terminal cyano groups on the catalyst surface. These defects served a dual function: electrostatically repelling corrosive chloride ions to ensure high OER selectivity and simultaneously modulating the electronic structure of metal centers to enhance hydroxide adsorption. The HE-MOF demonstrated industrial-level durability, operating at 1 A cm-2 for more than 300 hours in an anion-exchange membrane electrolyzer with negligible degradation. Finally, the dissertation addresses the morphological instability of copper catalysts during electrochemical CO2 reduction. Pristine copper nanoparticles are prone to severe dissolution and redeposition under reducing potentials, leading to a loss of active sites and a shift in selectivity toward the unwanted hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To mitigate this, graphene-encapsulated Cu nanoparticles (CuGr) were investigated. The graphene shell acted as a selective, conductive physical barrier that confined the copper core, preventing structural degradation while maintaining electrochemical access. This confinement strategy effectively decoupled morphological stability from catalytic activity, preserving high selectivity for multi-carbon products such as ethylene and ethanol over extended operation. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that tailoring the local chemical and physical environment of electrocatalysts through heteroatom doping, defect engineering, and physical encapsulation offers a robust pathway to overcoming the trade-offs between activity and stability in sustainable fuel production technologies.
