This Ph. D. dissertation aims to investigate and understand the systematics of the family Histeridae, comprising two main subjects: i) taxonomic review of Histeridae in the Korean Peninsula; ii) molecular phylogeny of Histeridae based on most comprehensive large-scale molecular data, with insights into morphological adaptation to its microhabitats.
In the first chapter, Histeridae is reviewed based on 83 species belonging to 32 genera and 16 tribes across eight subfamilies from the Korean Peninsula. Six species new to science and 11 unrecorded species are recognized. The revised classification is applied in this taxonomic revision (see part 2). All Korean species and genera are redescribed or diagnosed with high-resolution images and keys to subfamilies, tribes, genera, and species.
In the second section, molecular phylogeny of Histeridae is reconstructed based on 15 mitochondrial genes and two nuclear ribosomal DNA genes, with comprehensive sampling with total of 105 taxa including 98 in-group terminals belonging to 21 out of 24 tribes and all nine currently recognized subfamilies. An eight-subfamily classification is proposed, accompanying some taxonomic changes. In addition, ancestral-state reconstruction of microhabitat under Bayesian and parsimony approaches was conducted. The ancestral microhabitat was most often recovered as open decomposing substrates, with subcortical, bark-beetle gallery, and inquiline-related habitats evolving multiple times in different lineages. Body-form evolution shows clear ecomorphological associations: cylindrical profiles in bark-beetle galleries, flattened forms under bark, and more compact outlines in free-living and inquiline contexts.
