As the massive amount of information is overloaded in the information society, brain-inspired neuromorphic devices with parallel processing have been attracting interests to overcome von neumann bottleneck. Synaptic devices which act as artificial synapses mimic the human brain system can be featured in the representative structure of memristor or transistor. The synaptic behaviors can be modulated by ion dynamics in each structure.
First of all, two-terminal memristor is operated by defect modulation in moly disulfide (MoS2). Solvent-assisted vacancy engineering (SAVE) method is proposed to modulate sulfur vacancies by immersing MoS2 in solvents with similar solubility and different polarity. SAVE-treated devices show both memristive performance and synaptic behavior due to the vacancy migration while pristine device does not.
Then, three-terminal electrolyte-gated transistor (EGT) with ion-trapping interlayer is proposed to modulate ion dynamics. The thickness of interlayer can be optimized by adjusting the trap capacity. Thickness around 500 nm shows near-linear long-term potentiation and depression (LTP/LTD) with improved retention, which is an optimized thickness.
Both of two devices show their application in neuromorphic computing. Controlling ion dynamics—enabled by defect engineering and interlayer modulation—yields mechanistic insight into synaptic operation and a direct pathway to integrate materials physics with neuromorphic computing.
