The rapid advancement of flexible and foldable display technologies has imposed unprecedented performance requirements on all materials within multilayer display stacks. Among them, optically clear adhesives (OCAs) have emerged as critical components that simultaneously govern mechanical reliability, optical integrity, and long-term durability. While conventional petroleum-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) provide excellent adhesion and viscoelastic stability during use, their permanent bonding nature and chemical inertness present significant obstacles to device disassembly, recycling, and sustainable material recovery at the end of life.
This dissertation addresses this fundamental contradiction by proposing and validating a new design paradigm for temporally programmed optically clear adhesives, which remain mechanically stable during device operation while enabling controlled debonding, degradation, and recycling after use. The central objective of this work is to integrate adhesive performance, processing efficiency, and end-of-life functionality within a unified materials design framework that spans the entire adhesive life cycle.
In Chapter 2, the construction of sustainable OCAs is investigated through the molecular design of biomass-derived monomers and the implementation of visible-light-driven polymerization. Visible-light curing is demonstrated to be not merely a processing alternative, but a deliberate design strategy that enables homogeneous polymer network formation under mild and energy-efficient conditions while preserving latent chemical functionality. The resulting OCAs exhibit high optical transparency, mechanically compliant viscoelastic behavior, and robust folding durability, satisfying the stringent requirements of flexible and foldable displays.
Chapter 3 focuses on the deconstruction of adhesive functionality in a controlled and sequential manner. By incorporating lipoic acid-derived monomers containing dynamic disulfide bonds directly into the polymer backbone, adhesive networks are endowed with dormant chemical reactivity that remains inactive during use. These OCAs maintain stable rheological and adhesion properties under operational conditions, while enabling clean, residue-free debonding upon ultraviolet irradiation. Subsequent reductive treatments allow the adhesive networks to undergo controlled degradation into low-molecular-weight oligomers or, under mild conditions, chemical recycling into monomeric species. A compositional threshold for effective degradation and monomer recovery is identified, and the viscoelastic and adhesion properties are further tuned by varying the acrylic comonomer while maintaining high dynamic monomer content.
Collectively, this work establishes a sequential life-cycle pathway for optically clear adhesives, encompassing stable adhesion during use, clean debonding upon triggering, controlled degradation after removal, and selective monomer recovery for reuse. Beyond flexible display applications, the design principles developed in this dissertation provide generalizable insights into the development of high-performance polymer systems that reconcile durability with sustainability through temporally programmed functionality.
