Natural hydrogen, often referred to as “white hydrogen,” has recently emerged as a promising carbon-free energy resource due to increasing evidence of geological hydrogen generation in the subsurface. Harnessing mineral-derived hydrogen directly within chemical processes could provide a decentralized and low-carbon alternative to conventional fossil-based hydrogen. In this context, this study explores Fe-bearing olivine as an in-situ hydrogen source capable of driving catalytic hydrogenation in a one-pot hydrothermal system.
We designed a coupled serpentinization-hydrogenation reaction in which hydrogen generated from olivine is consumed immediately for organic reduction. Under acidic hydrothermal conditions, olivine produced 104 mmol H2 / kgolivine at 250 °C. Direct hydrogenation of 1-dodecene occurred even without catalysts, yielding 181.6 mmol dodecane / kgolivine. This behavior reflects the thermodynamic coupling in which unfavorable Fe²⁺ oxidation is driven by the strongly exergonic formation of Mg-silicate phases during serpentinization. Incorporation of Pd/C catalyst further enhanced hydrogen utilization, achieving 63.3% dodecane yield.
This approach highlights the potential of Earth-abundant minerals as functional hydrogen sources, opening new possibilities for integrating natural hydrogen systems into catalytic process design.
