This dissertation presents a comprehensive study on the development and optimization of cathode materials for next-generation secondary batteries, focusing on lithium–sulfur (Li–S) and sodium-ion (Na-ion) systems. The research aims to overcome the fundamental limitations of current lithium-ion technologies by introducing advanced electrode architectures and surface engineering strategies that enhance electrochemical stability, conductivity, and energy density.
Chapter2 investigates lithium–sulfur batteries, which are considered one of the most promising candidates for high-energy-
density energy storage systems. Li–S batteries exhibit an exceptionally high theoretical energy density (~2600 Wh kg-1) based on the multi-electron redox reaction between sulfur and lithium. However, their commercialization has been hindered by several intrinsic challenges, including the polysulfide shuttle effect, poor electronic conductivity of sulfur, and significant volume changes during charge–discharge cycling. To address these issues, carbon nanotube (CNT)-based current collectors were directly grown on conductive substrates using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to provide robust electrical networks and minimize interfacial resistance. Additionally, microwave treatment and reactive ion etching (RIE) were employed to improve sulfur impregnation uniformity and surface wettability, while binder-free electrode configurations were developed to eliminate insulating polymers. These combined strategies significantly enhanced charge–discharge efficiency, sulfur utilization, and cycling durability.
Chapter 3 explores sodium-ion batteries as sustainable and cost-effective alternatives to lithium-based systems. Layered oxide cathode materials— Na0.7MnO2, Na(Ni1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3)O2, and Na(Ni0.25Fe0.25Mn0.5)O2 —were synthesized and systematically analyzed to elucidate their structural evolution and sodium-ion diffusion behavior. Surface modification techniques, including FePO4 and graphene coatings, were applied to enhance interfacial stability, suppress phase transitions, and improve electronic conductivity, resulting in superior rate capability and long-term cycling performance.
The results of this study demonstrate that integrated approaches combining cathode material engineering, interfacial control, and structural optimization can effectively address key electrochemical challenges in both lithium–sulfur and sodium-ion batteries. The findings provide valuable insights and technological foundations for realizing high-energy-density, durable, and economically viable next-generation secondary batteries suitable for large-scale energy storage and advanced portable applications.
