Concrete industry is responsible for about 8% of total anthropogenic CO2 emission worldwide, and almost of this CO2 emissions originated from cement production. Replacing cement with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is one of the most feasible way to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. Therefore, the development of the blended cement containing high-volume SCMs with the performance similar to or exceeding that of Portland cement has been intensively investigated. This thesis aims to develop a high-performance high-volume slag cement (HVSC) containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) over 50 wt.% by using alkanolamines.
Firstly, the effects of triethanolamine (TEA) and diethanol-isopropanolamine (DEIPA) used as grinding aids (GAs) during the pulverization of blast furnace slag (BFS) were investigated, along with the resulting hydration and strength development of HVSC containing 50 wt.% GGBFS. Grinding BFS with 0.1 wt.% TEA produced the finest particles, whereas 0.5 wt.% caused particle aggregation. TEA enhanced the aluminate reaction of HVSC and increased the formation of AFm phases, leading to the greatest GGBFS reactivity and the highest amount of C(-A)-S-H at 28 days when 0.1 wt.% TEA was used. Consequently, HVSC incorporating GGBFS ground with 0.1 wt.% TEA achieved the highest 28-day compressive strength, surpassing that of Portland cement. A comparative analysis of TEA and DEIPA showed that both GAs improved slag fineness at 0.1 wt.% and caused aggregation at 0.5 wt.%. DEIPA exhibited higher grinding efficiency and faster early hydration than TEA at the same dosage, resulting in higher early strength at 0.1 wt.%. However, the 28-day strengths of TEA- and DEIPA-containing samples were similar; the rapid early strength of the DEIPA sample was attributed to its finer particle size, while the long-term strength increase with TEA was associated with its stronger tendency to form complexes with aluminates, which promoted greater AFm formation and sustained hydration.
Then, the effect of DEIPA on the chloride distribution and hdydration of HVSC containing NaCl. Throughout the entire hydration period, a Friedel’s salt-hemicarbonate solid solution (FSSS), instead of pure Friedel’s salt, was formed. The formation of FSSS increased with DEIPA, but the chloride content in FSSS was not dependent on DEIPA dosage. As a result, the chloride binding increased with DEIPA due to the enhanced formation of FSSS. Meanwhile, with increasing DEIPA, the chloride adsorption on C(-A)-S-H, which is influenced by the water-soluble chloride, decreased since the chloride was distributed more in Cl-AFm phases. The early-age compressive strength decreased with increasing DEIPA content as DEIPA retarded the reaction of alite. However, this strength drop was partially recovered as DEIPA enhanced the degree of GGBFS reaction at later ages.
Finally, the synergy between ethanol-diisopropanolamine (EDIPA) and LS on the hydration of HVSC was revealed. EDIPA influenced the sulfate demand and the sulfate distribution in the binder. In the presence of LS, ettringite was not converted to AFm phases, and EDIPA increased the formation of CO2-AFm phases such as monocarboaluminate and hemicarboaluminate. Furthermore, the ettringite formation increased at 28 days as the enhanced aluminate reaction by adding EDIPA led to desorption of sulfate from C(-A)-S-H. LS and EDIPA both could enhance the reactivity of GGBFS, forming more amount of C(-A)-S-H at the same LS content. As a result, EDIPA significantly improved the mechanical performance of slag-LS ternary cement, which was higher than that of LS-free HVSC from early age.
In summary, the effects of alkanolamines on the grinding BFS and the hydration of HVSC, including the synergies with chloride salt and LS, are systematically analyzed. Consequently, the methods for improving the performance of HVSC is suggested, and the underlying mechanisms are elucidated in this thesis.
