Advanced industries such as aerospace, automotive, and energy require materials capable of reliably maintaining their mechanical performance under prolonged high-temperature conditions, typically several hundred degrees Celsius. In such high-temperature environments, even under stresses below the material's yield strength, conventional deformation mechanisms such as transformation plasticity and creep can occur. These mechanisms may cause gradual deformation accumulation, potentially leading to eventual failure of critical components during operation. Thus, accurately understanding and controlling complex deformation behaviors at elevated temperatures is critical from an industrial perspective, necessitating a fundamental and quantitative understanding of high-temperature plastic deformation mechanisms.
Recently, a novel deformation mechanism termed Migrating Boundary-Induced Plasticity (MBIP) was proposed to explain deformation phenomena inadequately described by traditional mechanisms. MBIP refers to irreversible plastic deformation arising from localized atomic rearrangements and vacancy generation/annihilation processes associated with thermally activated grain boundary migration under low-stress, high-temperature conditions. The identification and foundational understanding of the MBIP mechanism have provided new insights into high-temperature deformation behavior, laying important groundwork for precise modeling of such phenomena. However, to broaden the applicability of existing MBIP models across various materials and temperature ranges, it became necessary to explicitly incorporate temperature-dependent microstructural changes—particularly the grain-growth stagnation phenomenon—into the theoretical framework.
In this study, systematic atomistic analyses using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, coupled with precise experimental approaches, were employed to investigate temperature-dependent characteristics of the MBIP phenomenon. Initially, atomistic MD simulations were conducted on polycrystalline titanium and iron models under diverse high-temperature and low-stress conditions. These simulations clearly revealed that grain boundary migration rates accelerated at higher temperatures, correspondingly enhancing the accumulation of MBIP strain. Particularly, grain-growth stagnation, a phenomenon where grain boundary migration slows and eventually halts at a certain critical grain size, was found to significantly influence the magnitude and rate of MBIP strain accumulation. Notably, MBIP strain develops rapidly during the early stage of GB migration and then continues at a reduced, steady rate.
Based on these atomistic insights, the current research extended the MBIP modeling framework to explicitly incorporate the temperature-dependent grain-growth stagnation phenomenon, by extending the Coble‑creep framework to incorporate grain‑boundary‑migration velocity. This advancement involved clearly defining and integrating critical physical parameters—such as the stagnated grain size and activation energy for vacancy formation—into the model. As a result, the newly developed MBIP model can accurately predict MBIP-induced deformation magnitudes and strain rates under various temperature conditions and across different material systems.
To verify the validity of the enhanced MBIP model, experimental dilatometry tests were performed using high-purity titanium under near-stress-free conditions. Experiments clearly demonstrated the measurable accumulation of MBIP strain over extended high-temperature exposure, even in the absence of substantial external stress. Importantly, these experimental results showed excellent agreement with predictions from the proposed MBIP model, underscoring its accuracy and general applicability. Furthermore, the model’s generality and predictive accuracy were also confirmed through additional MD simulations conducted on an iron system, providing strong support for the universality of the MBIP phenomenon.
In conclusion, this research demonstrates that MBIP constitutes a distinct deformation mechanism, fundamentally distinguishable from traditional high-temperature deformation mechanisms. By systematically incorporating temperature-dependent effects such as grain-growth stagnation, the newly developed MBIP modeling approach significantly improves the precision and reliability of predicting high-temperature deformation behaviors across diverse material systems. This study thus has both theoretical and practical significance, offering robust scientific foundations for improving the reliability of material deformation predictions in various industrial applications exposed to prolonged high-temperature environments. Future work based on this research is expected to provide critical foundational insights for the accurate assessment of long-term operational performance and maintenance strategies of high-temperature engineering components, including long‑term stability and service‑life assessments.
