The accelerating global transition toward carbon neutrality and the pursuit of a sustainable society have amplified the urgency for advanced energy storage technologies capable of accommodating the intermittent nature of renewable power sources. Among various candidates, lithium-ion batteries have established themselves as the technological cornerstone of modern electrification—powering portable electronics, electric vehicles, and large-scale grid systems. Within this paradigm, the cathode material serves as both the energetic heart and the economic determinant of the entire cell, defining the ultimate limits of energy density, cost, and long-term reliability. Since their inception in the 1980s, layered transition-metal oxides have particularly stood at the forefront of cathode research, offering a robust structural framework with high redox potential and reversible lithium intercalation. Beyond the conventional layered oxide framework, Li-rich layered oxides incorporating anionic redox chemistry have been introduced—unlocking unprecedented theoretical capacities and enhanced cost competitiveness. These materials, however, also confront intricate challenges arising from oxygen redox, including structural destabilization, chemical irreversibility, and mechanical degradation across multiple length scales. The discovery of O2-type layered structures, characterized by electrostatically stabilized oxygen frameworks that suppress transition-metal migration, has opened a transformative pathway toward achieving reversible anionic redox reactions. Realizing the full potential of these materials necessitates a fundamental understanding of the intertwined phenomena governed by oxygen redox. In this thesis, in-depth perception about the degradation mechanisms associated with oxygen redox in O2-type Li-rich layered oxides is systematically elucidated by bridging insights from mechanical structural evolution to the electrochemical response within oxygen redox. Building upon these mechanistic insights, rational design principles are proposed to ensure durable and reversible anionic redox and enable reversible and durable anionic redox chemistry.
Chapter 2 defines the sequential evolution of electro-chemo-mechanical degradation, one of the main degradation origins in O2-type Li-rich layered oxides. A series of O2-type Li-rich layered oxides was synthesized and exhibited minimal structural disordering and stable voltage retention even under high anionic redox participation. A distinct asymmetric lattice-breathing phenomenon was identified within the layered framework, driven by excessive oxygen redox and accompanied by substantial particle-level mechanical stress and microcrack formation upon cycling. This degradation pathway was effectively mitigated by balancing the anionic and cationic redox contributions, securing both high discharge voltage (~ 3.43 V vs. Li/Li+) and capacity (~ 200 mAh g−1) over extended cycles. The observed correlation between oxygen-redox capability and structural evolution revealed a distinct intrinsic capacity-fading mechanism, differing fundamentally from the conventional voltage-fading mode.
Chapter 3 elucidates the mechanistic origin of intragranular cracking, a representative form of mechanical degradation, under high-voltage oxygen redox conditions. This study reports, for the first time, the existence of rotational stacking faults (RSFs) in layered lithium transition-metal oxides, arising from angularly misaligned stacking sequences. Integrated experimental and computational analyses demonstrate that RSFs facilitate oxygen dimerization and transition-metal migration, thereby accelerating microcrack nucleation and propagation through cumulative electro-chemo-mechanical degradation during cycling. Furthermore, thermal defect annihilation is proposed as an effective approach to suppress RSFs, reduce microcracks, and enhance cycling stability, offering new synthesis insights for developing high-energy layered oxide cathodes.
Chapter 4 investigates the chemical strain evolution associated with oxygen redox through the dynamics of its key byproduct, the oxygen dimer, and proposes a strategy to suppress related degradation. The study unveils that oxygen-defect engineering, commonly employed in ceramic oxide systems, can be paradoxically repurposed to modulate dimer behaviors in Li-rich layered cathodes. By tuning alkali-metal stoichiometry coupled with ion-exchange methodologies, the controlled population of bulk oxygen defects can be introduced for reconfiguring the oxygen sublattice. Combined experimental and computational investigations verify successful defect incorporation and reveal that the defect sites serve as energetic anchors for oxygen dimers, attenuating their mobility and following chemo-mechanical stress accumulation throughout oxygen redox processes. The engineered framework thereby suppressed significant structural distortion and enhanced redox stability, delivering high energy density together with extended cycle life – addressing a longstanding challenge of oxygen-redox cathode materials. These findings establish oxygen-defect engineering as a foundational design paradigm for stabilizing oxygen-redox electrodes and provide a versatile synthetic platform for next-generation layered-oxide cathodes in advanced energy storage applications.
Collectively, this thesis rigorously maps the electro-chemo-mechanical degradation pathways in O2-type Li-rich layered oxides—one of the most critical failure mechanisms in high-energy layered cathodes—and proposes stepwise mitigation strategies that enable genuinely reversible anionic redox activity. These comprehensive insights provide not only a scientific foundation for understanding oxygen-redox–driven phenomena but also a guiding blueprint for the design of transformative layered oxide cathodes that reconcile high energy density with long-term stability.
