As climate change accelerates, the efficient utilization of renewable energy is essential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources necessitates the development of effective energy storage and conversion systems. Hydrogen has emerged as an eco-friendly energy carrier that bridges renewable energy generation and consumption, offering high energy density and efficient energy conversion. Green hydrogen production via water electrolysis and unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) driven by renewable electricity offers a promising route toward net-zero carbon emissions while serving as an intermediate platform for large-scale energy conversion.
Water electrolysis involves the electrochemical splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen through the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode. URFCs integrate water electrolysis and fuel cell operation into a single electrochemical system, in which the oxygen electrode plays a dual role by catalyzing the OER during water electrolysis and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) during fuel cell operation. The sluggish kinetics and structural instability of OER electrocatalysts under harsh anodic conditions remain critical bottlenecks for both water electrolyzers and URFCs.
Since OER involves continuous structural evolution of catalyst surfaces under operating conditions, identifying the actual active sites and elucidating the origin of electrocatalytic activity remain major challenges. The dynamic surface transformations hinder the rational design of highly active and durable electrocatalysts. In addition, porous structural design plays a critical role in OER electrocatalysis by promoting efficient oxygen bubble release, mass transport, and regulating the accessible catalyst–electrolyte interfaces, thereby improving catalyst utilization. Therefore, a deeper understanding of dynamic structural evolution and structure-activity relationships is essential for the rational design of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.
This thesis focuses on elucidating how structural modulation of active sites governs electrocatalytic behavior, providing fundamental insights into catalyst design for sustainable hydrogen production.
    In Chapter 1,
Introduced the background and significance of green hydrogen and hydrogen energy conversion systems. The fundamental concepts of water electrolysis and URFC are summarized, along with the basic mechanisms of the OER. Current challenges and design strategies for achieving high activity and durability in OER and oxygen electrocatalysts are also discussed.
    In Chapter 2,
Vanadium is incorporated into facet-defined Co-based spinel oxides to elucidate the surface transformation during electrocatalysis. Vanadium leaching under operation conditions induces oxygen vacancy formation, and subsequent surface reconstruction, generating highly OER-active oxyhydroxide phases. This dynamically reconstructed surface optimizes the binding energy of reaction intermediates, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability under alkaline conditions.
    In Chapter 3,
Hierarchical porous oxygen electrode is designed for anion-exchange membrane-based URFCs. By integrating electrocatalysts into a conductive carbon nanotube framework with macropores, the electrode simultaneously enhances mass transport, electron transport, and catalyst utilization. The resulting oxygen electrode exhibits enhanced bifunctional activity and durability for both oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions, enabling high round-trip efficiency and stable cycling performance in URFC operation.
Collectively, this thesis presents a comprehensive strategy for achieving high-performance electrocatalysts for alkaline water electrolysis. By revealing the role of structural modulation, this work provides fundamental insights into the rational design of electrocatalysts for sustainable energy storage systems for green hydrogen production.
