The domestication of plants is often considered one of the most impactful processes in human (pre)history, and a prerequisite for the development of agricultural economies. Plant domestication is often evoked as an evolutionary inflection point that resulted not only in changes in plants but also major shifts in human societies, including increased population, sedentism, and social and political complexity. While different plant taxa were independently domesticated in multiple regions of the world, the majority of the world’s domesticated plants were spread from their regions of domestication to other regions already inhabited by foraging populations that adopted them in various ways, and in some cases, rejected them. Understanding the evolutionary history of plant domestication as well as global transitions to agriculture, therefore, requires researchers to more closely investigate the various ways in which domesticated plants adapted to new ecologies and socio-economic contexts as they were introduced to regions beyond those of their domestication origins.
The spread of domesticated broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica) from their region of domestication origins in northern China to the Korean peninsula during Korea’s Chulmun Period (ca. 8000-1500 BCE) provides an important case study in this regard. As broomcorn millet and foxtail millet were introduced from northern China, the Korean peninsula had been occupied by established hunting, fishing, and foraging societies for several millennia. However, besides the basic fact that broomcorn millet and foxtail millet were eventually incorporated into Chulmun societies, little is understood with regards to the timing and mechanisms of their introduction, the intensity of their cultivation and use, and whether domesticated millets continued to be cultivated until the end of the Chulmun Period. These questions are of interest because, although Chulmun-period societies engaged in millet cultivation, research suggests that Chulmun social dynamics shifted from relatively large, stable settlement communities to small, dispersed, and mobile communities over time—a dynamic that contradicts many classical associations researchers have drawn between farming, community size, and sedentism.
This study analyzes a relatively small but targeted set of archaeobotanical data in order to make a broad-scale diachronic comparison of domesticated millet cultivation and use from the Early phase (ca. 6000-4500 BCE) through the Final phase (ca. 2000-1500 BCE) of the Chulmun Period to investigate the timing of the spread of domesticated millets, the persistence and/or cessation of their cultivation, and potential changes in the intensity of their use and cultivation through time. Analyses of ceramic seed impressions, macrobotanical remains recovered through flotation, and phytoliths suggest that millet cultivation likely did not begin until the Middle phase of the Chulmun Period (after ca. 4000 BCE). In the beginning of the Middle phase, which is associated with the spread of the eponymous Chulmun pottery, evidence of domesticated millets remains scant, which may suggest that millet cultivation was not fully established as a subsistence practice for the first centuries of its introduction. Millet cultivation, however, seems to have persisted all the way to the end of the Chulmun Period (ca. 1500 BCE), despite evidence for decreasing community size and increased mobility in the Late and Final phases of the Chulmun Period.
An exploratory morphometric analysis of millet grains well-preserved as impressions in ceramics suggests that, following their introduction to Korea during the Chulmun Period, broomcorn millet and foxtail millet grain size ceased increasing or may have even decreased. These data suggest a reverse of the trend that is observed in contemporaneous northern China, where increasingly intensive cultivation practices led to a steady increase in grain size. Although the sample size in this exploratory analysis is too small to draw a firm conclusion, it is suggested that ‘minimal intervention’ cultivation techniques, which have been observed among many hunting-fishing-foraging and cultivating mixed-subsistence economies throughout the world, may have been employed by Chulmun forager-cultivators and that after millennia of minimal-intervention cultivation, broomcorn millet and foxtail millet may have undergone arrested domesticated or processes that may be described as ‘dedomestication’.
Finally, the archaeobotanical data analyzed in the study were incorporated to design an agent-based patch-choice model that models settlement-size dynamics in a purely foraging context versus a minimal-intervention cultivation and foraging context. While the model requires oversimplification of both environmental, social, and subsistence dynamics, the results of these initial simulations suggest that the addition of minimal-intervention cultivation to a predominantly foraging economy likely encourages smaller, dispersed community sizes when compared against a purely foraging economy in a patchy environment. It is suggested, tentatively, that the spread of domesticated millet cultivation, therefore, may have contributed to smaller group sizes and increasing mobility over time. In this regard, the spread of domesticated millets into Chulmun Period Korea likely represents a very different evolutionary trajectory than the classical domestication-to-agriculture narrative. In this case, the spread of domesticated plant taxa did not result in a shift towards increasing reliance on cultivated plant resources, and instead, the use and cultivation of these taxa may have remained stably minimal for multiple millennia. Such cases may have been more common in human history and prehistory and deserve more scholarly attention.
