An inertial navigation system (INS) is an autonomous navigation system capable of estimating the position, velocity, and attitude of a vehicle without relying on external navigation information, and it is widely utilized across various fields. However, an INS inherently suffers from the structural limitation that errors in its internal accelerometers and gyroscopes accumulate over time, significantly degrading navigation performance during long-term operation. Therefore, effectively managing sensor errors and the resulting navigation errors is a critical challenge in the field of inertial navigation.
To overcome these limitations, rotational inertial navigation systems (RINS) have recently gained significant attention. Unlike conventional strapdown systems, this approach mounts the inertial measurement unit (IMU) on a rotating platform rather than fixing it to the vehicle body, and actively rotates the IMU independently of the vehicle’s maneuvers. This enables certain sensor errors to be self-canceled through rotation. While some errors, such as gyro bias, can be easily mitigated through axis modulation, other errors, such as scale factor errors and misalignment, may introduce additional attitude errors during rotation. Therefore, it is essential to design a superior rotation scheme that accounts for these diverse error sources in a comprehensive manner to minimize overall navigation error. This study presents a systematic methodology for designing such a rotation scheme and derives a specific sequence based on it.
To design an enhanced rotation scheme, feasible rotational motions for a dual-axis RINS are first defined, and the navigation error characteristics induced by each action are analyzed. From this, combinations of cancelable errors are identified, and a rotation scheme is constructed to minimize the overall navigation error by considering not only attitude errors but also the accumulation of velocity and position errors. The proposed rotation scheme demonstrates improved navigation performance compared to existing rotation schemes.
While such enhanced rotation schemes can cancel attitude errors induced by sensor imperfections during the navigation phase, they cannot eliminate pre-existing initial attitude errors. Consequently, initial alignment plays a critical role in determining the performance of a rotating INS. Due to its structural characteristics, this system can perform multi-position alignment without vehicle maneuvers, providing an advantage for improving alignment accuracy. In this process, self-calibration techniques that estimate multiple error sources simultaneously also play an important role.
This study proposes a filtering structure that enhances initial alignment and self-calibration performance by utilizing not only velocity measurements but also angle information obtained from the platform encoders. Furthermore, a filter model is developed that estimates the non-orthogonality between the two rotation axes, enabling more accurate initial alignment. An observability analysis of the designed system and measurement model is performed to determine the minimum required rotation actions, and the proposed method is verified to significantly improve initial alignment and self-calibration performance.
The proposed rotation scheme, along with the enhanced initial alignment and self-calibration method, substantially improves the long-term navigation performance of RINS by effectively reducing accumulated navigation errors caused by sensor imperfections. Moreover, the rotation scheme design framework and the observability-based initial alignment approach presented in this study can be applied to various RINS architectures and operational environments, providing a robust foundation for future high-precision autonomous navigation system development.
