Recent studies have shown that climate models exhibit a large inter-model spread in cloud feedback under anthropogenic radiative forcing. Anvil clouds have thickness-dependent radiative effects, making their fractional response to surface warming important to uncertainty in cloud feedback. We investigate how anvil clouds respond to surface warming using eight storm-resolving models under radiative-convective equilibrium. Across the models, a stronger reduction in thick anvil fraction is accompanied by a stronger reduction in thin anvil fraction, suggesting that their responses to surface warming are governed by a common mechanism. Furthermore, the models exhibiting larger reductions in anvil fraction also show a pronounced decrease in the ice flux maximum, which is mainly linked to a reduction in convective area fraction. A reduction in convective area fraction leads to weaker upward ice transport into the upper troposphere and is closely associated with enhanced convective self-aggregation, which suppresses the maintenance of anvil cloud fraction. As a result, inter-model differences in the response of convective area fraction to surface warming emerge as a primary source of uncertainty in cloud feedback under surface warming.
