Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that simultaneously requires artistic expression and high levels of physical performance, with competitive success depending on technical precision, physical fitness, and body composition. However, previous studies have predominantly adopted single-factor approaches, focusing on individual physical fitness components. Additionally, the aesthetic expectations and intensive training loads characteristic of the sport may disrupt physiological balance and increase the risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), thereby negatively affecting both health and performance.
Studies that have objectively and simultaneously assessed multiple physical fitness variables in relation to performance are minimal, and investigations directly linking REDs-related indicators with physical fitness have largely relied on questionnaire-based methods. As a result, integrated analyses that consider the relative associations of diverse physical fitness factors alongside REDs risk indicators remain insufficient for understanding performance characteristics in elite rhythmic gymnasts. Despite its importance, few studies have comprehensively examined the interaction among performance, athlete level, physical characteristics, and REDs-related indicators in elite rhythmic gymnasts.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to comprehensively investigate the relationships among rhythmic gymnastics performance, athlete level, physical fitness, body composition, and REDs-related indicators in elite South Korean rhythmic gymnasts, as well as to examine differences according to athlete level and REDs risk level. Furthermore, this study aims to provide foundational data that may inform training planning and REDs risk management in elite rhythmic gymnasts.
A total of eighteen senior rhythmic gymnasts (7 national, 8 reserve, and 3 collegiate athletes) participated. Physical fitness measurements included aerobic capacity (VO₂max and VO₂@AT), muscular power and endurance, and reaction time. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis, and REDs risk was evaluated with the Korean version of the Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire (K-LEAF-Q). Statistical analyses were performed using partial correlation and univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), controlling for age and athletic career length.
The results showed that performance scores were significantly and negatively correlated with body fat percentage (r = –0.611, p = 0.046) and weekly training hours (r = –0.715, p = 0.013), indicating that lower body fat was associated with higher performance. In contrast, greater weekly training volume was not necessarily linked to improved performance. Weekly training hours were also negatively correlated with reaction time (r = –0.582, p = 0.018), suggesting that longer training exposure was associated with faster responses; however, reaction time was not significantly correlated with performance scores.
National athletes demonstrated higher dominant-leg muscular endurance (p = 0.034), lower body fat mass (p = 0.014), and lower body fat percentage (p = 0.026) compared to reserve athletes. Athletes with higher REDs risk showed a lower body fat percentage (p = 0.046). 10 out of 18 participants (55.6%) reported menstrual dysfunction, highlighting the prevalence of menstrual irregularities among elite rhythmic gymnasts. Moreover, the high-training-hour group exhibited shorter reaction times (p = 0.043), indicating that greater training volume was associated with faster reaction performance.
The findings indicate that while reduced body fat may enhance performance, it may also act as a potential risk factor for REDs. The lower body fat percentage and greater muscular endurance contribute to superior rhythmic gymnastics performance. However, excessive leanness or high training volume may increase physiological strain and susceptibility to REDs, potentially leading to impaired performance.
Rather than pursuing leanness or training volume in isolation, sustainable rhythmic gymnastics performance appears to depend on maintaining an optimal balance between physical fitness, body composition, and physiological resilience. These findings underscore the need for integrated monitoring approaches that consider REDs-related indicators alongside performance-related physical characteristics in elite rhythmic gymnasts.
