Li metal anodes (LMAs) have emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh g−1), low redox potential (−3.04 V vs standard hydrogen electrode), and low density (0.58 g cm−3), offering significant advantages over conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their practical application is hindered by severe challenges such as volume expansion and parasitic reactions with the electrolyte during cycling, which result in the growth of Li dendrites. To address these issues, various three-dimensional (3D) Li hosts have been explored. Nevertheless, conventional 3D Li hosts still suffer from structural limitations, including excessive surface area and preferential Li deposition on the upper layers, leading to Li dendrite formation due to continuous exposure of Li to the electrolyte.
Graphene-based 3D Li hosts have received growing attention because graphene combines high electrical conductivity, large surface area, chemical stability, and excellent mechanical strength. However, graphene-based Li metal electrodes still face several inherent challenges. These include an increased electrode–electrolyte interfacial area, prolonged Li-ion diffusion pathways arising from the stacked graphene structure, and non-uniform Li-ion concentration distribution in the electrolyte.
In this dissertation, A graphene-based 3D Li host is developed using two complementary strategies to address the intrinsic limitations of graphene-based electrodes. First, interfacial modification was achieved through the formation of a dual-layer coating, where each layer plays a different role in regulating Li-ion transport. Second, a structural engineering strategy was by introducing a lithiophilic gradient and an ionic-channel architecture, which enables selective and bottom-up Li deposition.
The combination of these two strategies expand effectively Li-ion transport pathways while mitigating electrolyte side reactions and achieving bottom-up Li deposition within the 3D host. The developed graphene-based 3D Li host was evaluated using electrochemical tests and theoretical analysis, and its practical performance was confirmed in both half-cell and full-cell tests.
