Achieving stable and agile locomotion in humanoid robots requires robust control frameworks that account for complex dynamics and environmental interactions. While simplified models have traditionally been employed in model-based control of humanoid locomotion due to computational challenges, the demand for leveraging whole-body dynamics to achieve higher performance has been increasing. This thesis addresses these issues by proposing a real-time whole-body model predictive control (WB-MPC) framework specifically designed for humanoid walking, emphasizing both computational efficiency and locomotion stability.
Firstly, walking simulations are conducted on humanoid models with various leg inertia distributions to evaluate contact condition margins and maximum walking velocity. Using both the Linear Inverted Pendulum Model (LIPM) and the centroidal dynamics with Full-body Kinematics model (FKM) as walking pattern generators, the study demonstrates that, regardless of the leg inertia distribution, employing the whole-body model consistently results in superior walking performance. This approach highlights the effectiveness of whole-body modeling in enhancing contact stability and dynamic performance during bipedal locomotion.
Secondly, we propose a framework for real-time humanoid walking control using WB-MPC with a whole-body model. The framework consists of three main components. The first component is a novel kino-dynamic model integrating the Linear Inverted Pendulum with Flywheel Model (LIPFM) and FKM, which incorporates whole-body dynamics via Zero-Moment Point (ZMP) concept while avoiding inverse dynamics computations and contact discontinuities. The proposed kino-dynamic model enables efficient nonlinear optimization through Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP). The second component is a modularized Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) that provides low-latency warm-starts, supplying high-quality initial guesses to enhance convergence rate of WB-MPC. The third component is a ZMP-based Whole-Body Controller(WBC), which stably regulates impacts during foot landing throughout walking. Lastly, the proposed WB-MPC framework is extended to enable 3D humanoid locomotion by incorporating a kino-dynamic model that integrates the Virtual-Mass-Ellipsoid Inverted Pendulum Model (VIPM) with the FKM. This allows stable walking on terrains requiring significant vertical motion, such as stairs, by explicitly accounting for the vertical movement of the center of mass.
Consequently, the performance of the proposed method has been validated through comparative experiments against existing approaches, as well as simulations and real-robot experiments. These contributions provide a scalable, efficient, and robust control framework, advancing the practical application of humanoid walking using WB-MPC in unstructured environments.
