The rapid growth of deep learning models offers remarkable solutions for the aviation sector and enables enhancements in flight safety. Despite the advanced on-board aircraft health monitoring systems which capture various kinds of anomalous parameters, unexpected underlying hardware malfunction could lead to inaccurate anomaly detection. Moreover, given the scarcity of available recorded flight data, amplified by the complexity among technical parameters, the existing deep learning detection techniques are focused on ongoing anomaly detection, rather than anomaly forecasting. Hence, a robust alternative prediction mechanism is essential for achieving an improved factor of safety.
To deal with this critical requirement, the paper introduces a real-time oriented anomaly prediction framework based on deep learning models GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit) and WAE-MMD (Wasserstein Autoencoder-Maximum Mean Discrepancy), along with specific data processing techniques and anomaly scores metrics, aiming to promptly predict technical flight anomalies. This architecture demonstrates effective prediction across various types of flight deviations before their occurrence, making it a suitable approach for handling anomalies in a preventive manner, as it provides additional time for the crew to avoid the predicted anomaly, or, in imminent cases, mitigate the potential consequences. Experiments were performed on both real scenarios and simulated flights, in real-time conditions, and showed robustness in predicting anomalies given hard deadlines particular to each type of analyzed anomaly.
