UV-triggered degradable materials are emerging as an essential technology for soft systems that require remote, precisely timed disappearance, including self-destructive soft robots for hardware security, transient electronic platforms, and data-protection devices. Although UV activation offers unmatched spatial and temporal selectivity, previously reported UV-degradable systems remain limited by shallow penetration depth and poor compatibility with UV-blocking fillers, which prevent the generation and transport of reactive species needed for bulk degradation. To address these limitations, a silicone elastomer composite was engineered to undergo rapid, complete, and on-demand degradation through a locally initiated yet bulk-propagating fluoride-amplification mechanism. Incorporation of a self-immolative fluoride-amplifying molecule (FIA) together with a photoresponsive fluoride generator, diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI-HFP), enables a cascading network of fluoride-releasing reactions triggered at the UV-exposed surface. Spectroscopic, thermal, and chemical analyses confirm that autocatalytic fluoride amplification drives efficient Si–O bond scission throughout the elastomer, even when UV-absorbing magnetic particles are embedded. The composite retains the mechanical integrity of conventional silicone elastomers, showing over 450 % elongation and a modulus near 60 kPa, and achieves full degradation within 60 minutes under UV illumination, despite containing 33 wt% magnetic fillers. A magnetically actuated soft robot fabricated from this composite demonstrates complex remote motions and on-demand destruction, highlighting the platform’s utility in secure and transient soft systems.
A subsequent development builds on this degradable platform to enable on-demand functional transition that goes beyond decomposition. The UV-triggered cleavage is repurposed as a solvent-free upcycling route that reconstructs the fragmented silicone chains into a hyper-branched elastomer with Si–OH and Si–F terminal groups. This reconfigured network yields a super-soft (< 10 kPa), elastic (≈ 80 % strain window), and intrinsically self-adhesive material. The coexistence of hydrophilic Si–OH and hydrophobic Si–F groups enables strong dry and wet adhesion, while the extremely low modulus and resilience allow conformal, fatigue-free coupling to soft and dynamically moving biological tissues without delamination or mechanical mismatch. The material exhibits biocompatibility, positioning it as a promising substrate for future soft and dynamic biomedical interfaces.
Together, these advances establish a UV-triggered fluoride-amplified degradation strategy for silicone elastomers and a complementary upcycling pathway that transforms degradation products into a mechanically compliant and adhesive biomaterial, enabling sustainable and functionally adaptive silicone systems for robotics, electronics, and biomedical technologies.
