Natural sunlight contains high proportions of green wavelengths (500–600 nm) that are absorbed less efficiently by chlorophyll compared to red or blue light. Green light has been shown to penetrate deeper into plant canopies and regulate stomatal aperture, playing complex roles in photosynthetic processes beyond simple absorption efficiency. However, research on spectral optimization has predominantly focused on supplementing green light to artificial LED systems rather than reducing it from naturally abundant solar radiation. This gap leaves unclear whether selective green light reduction from broad spectrum sunlight can enhance photosynthetic capacity and crop productivity. The effects of green light filtering on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Top Green) growth and photosynthetic performance were investigated under artificial solar lighting in controlled environment conditions. Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) examined which wavelength filtering (red, blue, or green) most effectively influenced growth by comparing green light filtering film (GFF, reducing green transmission by 17.8%) with red light filtering film (RFF), blue light filtering film (BFF), and conventional polyethylene film (PEF). Experiment 2 (Exp. 2) evaluated whether simple green light filtering could match wavelength conversion technology by comparing GFF with light shifting film (LSF, converting green to red wavelengths), PEF, and no film conditions (NF). In Exp. 1, GFF treatment significantly increased shoot dry weight by 17% compared to PEF, accompanied by enhanced leaf number without corresponding leaf area expansion. Notably, BFF induced stem elongation while GFF maintained compact growth similar to PEF. In Exp. 2, GFF achieved 25% higher shoot dry weight than PEF. Importantly, GFF and LSF produced comparable biomass and chlorophyll content, suggesting that green light reduction contributes substantially to the observed benefits. Photosynthetic measurements revealed a critical distinction between photosynthetic capacity and performance. When assessed under standardized conditions, treatments showed comparable photosynthetic capacity in Exp. 1, while GFF demonstrated significantly higher capacity than PEF in Exp. 2. However, measurements under treatment-specific spectral conditions demonstrated that GFF achieved 62% higher net photosynthetic rate compared to PEF despite receiving 20% lower light intensity. This indicates photosynthetic acclimation to green-reduced spectral environments rather than inherently superior photosynthetic machinery. Enhanced photosynthetic performance was accompanied by substantially elevated stomatal conductance under GFF compared to PEF in Exp. 1, facilitating increased CO₂ uptake. These findings demonstrate that selective reduction of naturally abundant green wavelengths enhances lettuce productivity through photosynthetic acclimation mechanisms including improved electron transport efficiency and stomatal optimization. The comparable performance between direct green light filtering (GFF) and wavelength conversion technology (LSF) offers the practical potential of green-light reduction as a spectral management approach for solar-based controlled environment agriculture. This strategy can be implemented without reliance on energy-intensive wavelength conversion processes.
