With the advancement of mobile devices such as smartphones and VR headsets, the demand for accurate indoor localization has increased significantly. Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) has been widely studied due to its high positioning accuracy; however, filter-based visual-inertial odometry (VIO) still suffers from severe performance degradation under visually challenging conditions such as illumination changes, lens occlusion, or featureless environments. To enhance localization accuracy and robustness against visual feature tracking failures, this thesis proposes a pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR)-aided monocular VIO algorithm with statistically derived and adaptively scaled PDR measurement error-covariance. Since PDR can provide reliable position estimates under vision-degraded conditions, its estimates are incorporated as additional measurements within a multi-state constraint Kalman filter (MSCKF). The PDR error-covariance is derived from the sampling distribution of the gain parameter in the Weinberg step length model and is adaptively scaled according to the proposed image measurement quality value (IMQV), which reflects both the number and the convex hull area of tracked features. Various real-world experiments demonstrate that the proposed method consistently achieves lower root mean square position error (RMSE) than standalone PDR, standalone VIO, and PDR-aided VIO methods with a constant PDR error-covariance, confirming its superior robustness under vision-degraded conditions.
