The aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle are key factors determining not only fuel efficiency but also high-speed driving stability and handling performance. Particularly in the transitional era from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EVs), designing aerodynamic devices that achieve the conflicting goals of drag reduction (for driving range) and downforce generation (for stability) is of paramount importance. In this study, the effects of front splitter design parameters (Height H, Length L) and underbody configurations (smooth vs. detailed) on the vehicle’s flow and aerodynamic characteristics were systematically analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on the DrivAer fastback model. Furthermore, to overcome the limitations of the initial front splitter, the ‘Vent front splitter’ and ‘V.E.P. splitter (Vent front splitter with extension plate)’ were proposed, and their performance was verified.
First, it was confirmed that the initial front splitter generates strong downforce by inducing flow separation at the leading edge and forming a massive recirculation zone, which accelerates the underbody flow regardless of the platform type. However, the drag generated by the pressure difference across the air dam becomes the primary cause of the overall vehicle drag increase. Additionally, a severe aerodynamic imbalance was observed, where downforce generation was concentrated on the front axle, inducing lift on the rear axle.
Second, this study clarified that the aerodynamic effects of the front splitter vary significantly depending on the underbody configuration. For the smooth underbody (representing EV platforms), as the splitter height (H) increased, flow acceleration beneath the splitter intensified, leading to a continuous increase in total downforce. In contrast, for the detailed underbody (representing ICE platforms), the splitter directed the underflow towards the ground, reducing interference with complex underbody structures. This resulted in a greater drag reduction effect of the vehicle body compared to the smooth model; notably, at the H = 10mm condition, superior efficiency was demonstrated by generating high downforce with almost no increase in overall vehicle drag.
Third, to address the overall vehicle drag increase (ranging from 6% to 12%) observed with the initial front splitter on the smooth underbody vehicle, a Vent front splitter (with the air dam removed) was proposed. While this design successfully resolved the drag penalty by suppressing the drag increase to within ±2% relative to the base model, it was confirmed that the downforce performance was significantly insufficient compared to the initial front splitter due to the disappearance of the recirculation zone, which is the key mechanism for lowering underbody pressure.
Finally, the V.E.P. splitter, incorporating an extension plate, was proposed to secure additional downforce for the Vent front splitter. This study identified the H30-L50V-LE150_S model as the optimal balance point within the complex trade-offs between H, L, and LE. This model exhibited a flow characteristic where it accelerated the flow between the splitter’s upper surface and the underbody most efficiently, causing the underbody surface pressure to uniquely decrease despite the increase in extension plate length. As a result, it achieved a downforce level equivalent to the initial front splitter (ΔCL −125%) without any drag increase (ΔCD −1.2%) relative to the base model, and successfully improved aerodynamic balance by recovering rear axle downforce.
This study presents a systematic design strategy to increase downforce using a front splitter without incurring a drag penalty for fastback type vehicles with different platforms (EV and ICE).
