In this thesis we investigate the formation, binary evolution, and final fates of massive stars across a wide range of metallicities, from metal-free Population III (Pop III) stars in the early universe and binary stars at solar and subsolar metallicity at local universe. Using one-dimensional stellar evolution calculations with MESA, we address three connected problems: (1) the effects of the Eddington limit modified by rapid rotation (the so-called ΩΓ-limit) on the formation of Pop III massive stars via rapid mass accretion, (2) the evolution of massive Pop III binary systems undergoing stable mass transfer and their implications on binary black hole formation and ionizing photon production, and (3) the evolution of Case A binary systems and their implications on electron-capture and Type Ibn supernovae.
First, we explore the role of the rotation-modified Eddington limit (the ΩΓ-limit) in the formation of massive Pop III stars. We perform one-dimensional stellar evolution of Pop III protostars with high mass accretion rate ( dM/dt∼0.001 solar mass per year), with a separate post-process on stellar rotation. The protostar is spun up to near-Keplerian rotation shortly after the onset of accretion, but mass growth can continue as angular momentum is transported outward into the accretion disk. When the stellar mass reaches ∼ 5–7 solar mass, rapid envelope expansion and a sharp increase in the Eddington factor bring the surface to the ΩΓ-limit, at an angular velocity significantly below the Keplerian rotation. The suppression of angular-momentum loss from the star to the disk strongly limits the further mass growth of the protostars up to ∼ 20–40 solar mass. An important consequence is that these rapidly accreting protostars remain relatively compact (R ≲ 50 solar radius), instead of developing the very extended envelopes (R ≳ 500 solar radius) found in non-rotating models with high mass accretion rates.
Second, we investigate the evolution of massive Pop III binary systems and their role in forming coalescing binary black holes and producing ionizing photons. We perform a grid calculation on non-rotating binary systems with primary masses of 40, 60, and 100 solar masses, mass ratios q = M2/M1 = 0.5–0.9, and initial separations chosen to undergo predominantly Case A or Case B mass transfer, assuming conservative mass transfer and estimating the common-envelope evolution with a simple α–λ prescription. Core masses are used as a criterion for the onset of pair-instability and pulsational pair-instability to constrain the final black hole masses. For the primary stars, Roche-lobe overflow generally fails to fully strip the whole hydrogen-rich envelope, so they retain a non-negligible amount of hydrogen and end as relatively compact blue supergiants. Also, the total ionizing photon production differs little from that of the corresponding single star models. The systems experiencing stable mass transfer can form close binary black holes without assuming rapid rotation or survival from the common-envelope phase. For suitable initial separations near the early Case B boundary and q ≳ 0.6, our models yield coalescing binary black holes with masses of ∼ 20–100 solar mass and coalescing timescales shorter than the Hubble time, comprising roughly 2–3% of all interacting systems of our grid. These systems can contribute to the population of massive gravitational-wave sources, including events in or near the pair-instability mass gap, where, however, their overall impact on cosmic reionization through ionizing photons and short-lived high mass X-ray binaries would not be significant.
Third, we investigate the evolution and final fates of massive Case A binary systems with primary masses of 11–19 solar masses, mass ratios 0.5 < q < 1, and initial periods of ≃ 1.5–5 days. Our primary goal is to quantify how Case A mass transfer affect the subsequent binary evolution and the final outcomes. In some systems that avoid a common-envelope phase during Case A mass transfer, later reverse Case B mass transfer from the secondary star can trigger a common-envelope phase. If the system successfully ejects the common-envelope and is disrupted by a strong natal kick when the secondary star explodes earlier than the primary star due to the rejuvenation of the secondary star (supernova reversal), the outcome can be a single helium star. Helium stars with final masses below about 3 solar mass would evolve to helium giants, which are promising progenitor candidates for Type Ibn supernovae. For primaries whose carbon–oxygen core masses lie in the range of 1.37–1.52 solar mass, some models develop oxygen–neon–magnesium cores that are expected to undergo electron-capture supernovae channel to a higher mass range compared to the single star case. We further show that the boundaries for reverse mass transfer, helium-giant formation, and the onset of electron-capture depend sensitively on the adopted convection criteria and metallicity. With simple assumptions about the initial mass, mass-ratio, and period distributions, we estimate that Type Ibn events are expected from a few percent (∼ 2.87%) of Case A systems. Overall, our results emphasize the importance of Case A systems for the diversity of stripped-envelope supernovae and compact remnants.
Taken together, these three studies show how rotation, metallicity, and close binary interaction jointly regulate the formation, evolution, and final fates of massive stars. The ΩΓ-limit constrains the masses and radii of rapidly accreting Pop III protostars, while stable mass transfer in Pop III opens channels toward massive coalescing binary black holes, and Case A interactions can lead to stripped-envelope electron-capture supernovae and helium giants as progenitors of Type Ibn supernovae.
