Soft mechanisms have gained considerable attention in robotics for enabling safe and adaptive interactions with humans and delicate environments. However, their intrinsic compliance leads to limitations in robustness, rapid response, and load capacity, advantages provided by traditional rigid mechanisms. Variable stiffness structures, which can transition between soft and rigid states, offer a promising solution, yet their use in real-world applications remains constrained by limited performance. This dissertation addresses this challenge by enhancing the mechanical versatility of variable stiffness structures in three key aspects. First, stiffness modulation must be aligned with the targeted degrees of freedom (DoFs). A systematic methodology for designing tailored jamming-based structures with user-defined DoFs is therefore introduced. The approach is validated through the development of a wearable glove assembly, demonstrating multi-DoF stiffness modulation tailored for wearable robotic applications. Second, a wide stiffness range is essential for achieving desired softness and rigidity. To this end, a flexure-based core embedded with gallium is proposed, utilizing gallium’s phase change and oxide-induced interfacial adhesion to significantly expand the stiffness range. Third, performance can be further extended through multi-stage stiffness modulation, rather than simple binary switching. This is realized using structures with pores or internal channels infiltrated with gallium, where phase change governs stiffness transitions and the injected volume enables pre-programmable multiple stages of stiffness states. Collectively, these contributions establish new design and material strategies for multi-functional variable stiffness mechanisms. By enhancing mechanical versatility, this work contributes to a broader deployment of variable stiffness mechanisms in soft robotic applications that demand both adaptability and load-bearing capability.
