Foreign direct investment (FDI) is very important for ASEAN’s economic growth, but too much dependence on foreign capital can also create problems and risks. This thesis develops a new FDI Dependency Index (FDDI) to measure how much ASEAN countries rely on FDI. The index combines both FDI inflows (% of GFCF) and FDI stock (% of GDP), so it can show not only short-term dependence but also long-term foreign ownership in the economy. The study focuses on six ASEAN countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines during the period 2010–2020.
The index is tested using panel data econometric analysis to check if higher FDI dependency is related to weaker economic performance. The validation results in Table 6 and Table 7 show that higher FDI dependency is strongly linked with weaker trade balances, which supports the idea from Dependency Theory that too much foreign investment can harm economic stability. The robustness check results in Table 8 and Table 9 also show a negative relationship between FDI dependency and medium- and high-tech manufacturing value added, meaning that countries that rely too much on FDI have weaker industrial development.
Overall, the findings suggest that while FDI helps ASEAN economies grow, heavy dependence on it can reduce trade performance and limit domestic technological upgrading. Among the ASEAN-6, Cambodia is found to be the most FDI-dependent country, while Malaysia and Thailand are more balanced. This thesis provides a simple and useful tool to compare FDI dependency across countries and gives policy suggestions for ASEAN governments to make their growth more sustainable and less dependent on foreign capital.
