The application scope of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is continuously expanding, extending beyond commercialized devices such as portable electronics, electric vehicles (EVs), and Energy Storage Systems (ESS), to encompass emerging areas like Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Among these sectors, the EVs market is experiencing exponential annual growth. To enhance driving range, which is arguably the most critical performance indicator for EV batteries, research efforts for cathode materials are increasingly focused on high-nickel layered oxide cathodes. Furthermore, parallel to the rapid expansion of the EVs market, high energy density and high power density are in urgent demand for facilitating the development of advanced portable devices, particularly the 3C (Computer, Communications, and Consumer) electronics, and UAM. In particular, Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2 or LCO), which is predominantly commercialized in portable electronic devices, must simultaneously satisfy the requirements for high voltage
and fast charging capabilities in order to achieve the desired high energy density and high power density. Satisfying these two critical requirements concurrently poses a significant challenge. In addition, Sulfur (S) cathodes utilized in aerial mobility are highly valued for their lightweight nature, cost-effectiveness, and high specific energy density due to their superior theoretical capacity compared to conventional layered oxide cathodes. However, aerial mobility platforms demand their highest power output characteristics during takeoff and landing hovers. Furthermore, a prerequisite for substantial market expansion is the ability to accommodate fast charging within short turnaround times during passenger exchange. Under such high-power demanding conditions, sulfur cathodes exhibit low utilization relative to their theoretical capacity due to inherently slow solid state conversion reactions dictated by their reaction mechanism. Therefore, enhancing sulfur utilization under high-power operation is essential for developing high-energy density, high-power density batteries by developing novel chalcogen cathodes. This thesis introduces two strategies aimed at high energy, high power density cathodes for the development of portable devices and UAM batteries.
Chapter 1 will discuss the historical backgrounds and intrinsic issues associated with high-voltage cut-off, fast charging (high rate) operation of LCO, which is predominantly requested conditions in portable electronic devices. Following this, the conversion reaction mechanism of sulfur and its critical issues stemming from sulfur's inherently low electrical conductivity, focusing on resulting slow reaction kinetics and low sulfur utilization.
Chapter 2 will discuss the topic of high-rate capability of LCO by phase engineering and elemental doping. The use of elemental doping in lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathode material at high cut-off voltage is a widely adopted technique in the field of rechargeable batteries to mitigate multiple unfavorable phase transitions. However, there is a still lack of fundamental understanding regarding the rationality of each doping elements implemented in this method, specifically considering the various thermodynamic stability and phase transitions. Herein, we investigated the effect of Ti-doping on an O2 phase LCO cathode, which exhibited enhanced rate performance. We suggest that the incorporation of Ti into an O2 phase LCO results in the mitigation of multiple phase transitions and improvement of phase stability, thereby yielding a high-rate-capable cathode. Through a combination of experimental and computational calculations, we demonstrate that Ti doping strategy enables high-energy and high-power density by improving the thermodynamic stability and kinetics of Li-ions during the cycling process.
Chapter 3 will discuss the alternative chalcogen cathodes for Selenium disulfide (SeS2) cathodes are promising components for the development of high-energy and
high-power density Li-S battery system. However, the (electro)chemical and structural evolution of this cathode is not yet fully understood. Here, we use operando physicochemical measurements to elucidate the dissolution and deposition processes in the SeS2 cathodes during charge and discharge. Our analysis of real-time imaging reveals the pivotal role of selenium (Se) in the SeS2 nucleation process, while S enables selective depositions on Se crystals. During the initial discharge, SeS2 converts into Se and S separately, with the dissolved Se acting as nucleation sites due to their lower nucleation potential than S. The Se effectively provides nucleation sites for the growth of S particles, resulting in improved lithium sulfur battery performance compared to cells using positive electrodes containing only Se or S as active materials. By adjusting the Se-to-S ratio, we demonstrate that a low concentration of Se providing uniform nucleation sites, promotes the homogeneous distribution of S and favours improved redox kinetics and utilization of S.
In summary, this thesis provides comprehensive strategies to overcome the kinetic and structural limitations of next-generation cathode materials, ranging from intercalation-based oxides to conversion-based chalcogenides. By elucidating the synergistic effects of Ti-doping in O2 phase LCO and the role of selenium as a nucleation site in SeS2 systems, this work establishes a robust framework for achieving both high energy and high power densities. These findings not only offer a fundamental understanding of phase stability and redox kinetics but also suggest practical pathways for the design of advanced power sources tailored for the evolving demands of portable electronics and UAM.
