This thesis diachronically examines the spatial distribution and internal dynamics of the residential spaces of Christian Armenians in Safavid Isfahan. Located in the Zayandeh River basin in the central Iranian plateau, Isfahan has historically been a prosperous city renowned for both its agriculture and commerce. It became the capital of the Safavid Empire during the reign of ʿAbbās I in the 1590s. Subsequently, the city underwent significant geographical and demographic transformations as a result of state-led development projects. Among these changes, the Christian Armenian community, previously a small minority, emerged as the foremost non-Muslim group in Isfahan by the early 17th century. This transformation was a consequence of the Safavid Empire’s scorched-earth policy and forced relocation of the population implemented during its retreat in the Safavid-Ottoman War of 1604 in the Caucasus. Christian Armenians who arrived in Isfahan initially resided throughout the city, coexisting with diverse religious groups. However, conflicts arose with the local residents, leading to the decision to construct New Julfa, a neighborhood for Christian Armenians south of the Zayandeh River, to address these issues. In its early stages, New Julfa was a space created for, by, and of Christian Armenians. Virtually all residents of New Julfa were Christian Armenians. Among them, the merchant class that engaged in long-distance trade maintained close ties with the Safavid Empire. Civil administration was primarily managed by these merchants and the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Safavid Empire’s involvement, through the dispatch of Muslim officials, was limited only to criminal matters. Despite the favorable environment offered by New Julfa, not all Christian Armenians in Isfahan resided there. Even after the substantial completion of New Julfa, a considerable number of Christian Armenians continued to live in various parts of Isfahan, coexisting with diverse religious groups. The mid-17th century marks the point when New Julfa became the exclusive residential space for all Christian Armenians in Isfahan. By the 1650s, the empire, facing internal difficulties, sought scapegoats to consolidate internal unity, and non-Shīʿīs became the target. In this atmosphere, from 1655 onwards, orders were issued to expel Christian Armenians from Isfahan, culminating in the relocation of all Christian Armenians to New Julfa by 1659. Simultaneously, however, New Julfa ceased to be exclusively a space for Christian Armenians. Firstly, the influx of Catholic missionaries led to the establishment of a Catholic Armenian community within New Julfa. Secondly, Zoroastrians who had lived alongside Christian Armenians in Gabrābād were also relocated to New Julfa. Finally, amid the empire’s increasingly hostile environment towards non-Muslims, some Christians voluntarily embraced Islam, a phenomenon also observed in New Julfa. While Muslim converts of Armenian origin were generally believed to have subsequently left New Julfa, some remained. By the early 18th century, a community of Muslim Armenians had formed within New Julfa to the extent that the government officially recognized their presence and issued a decree to build a mosque for them. Christian Armenians in the Safavid capital, Isfahan, in sum, were not always segregated from other religious groups. This is a counterexample of the common assumption of religious segregation in urban studies of Islamic societies.
