As society ages and single-person households increase, addressing the health and quality of life of middle-aged and older adults has become a critical social issue. Recognizing that these factors are central to successful aging, this study examines how subjective socioeconomic status (SES) affects health status satisfaction in this population. Likewise, reflecting the shifting family paradigm, this study aims to investigate the moderating effects of social networks, categorized into (1) social participation activities and (2) relationships with non-cohabiting children (frequency of contact and meetings).
Using data from the 9th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA, 2022), focusing on respondents aged 59 and older. The analysis of social gathering participation was conducted with 6,042 respondents, while the analysis of social network of non-cohabiting children was conducted with 3,765 respondents for frequency of contact and 5,329 respondents for frequency of meetings. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted in three stages. First, Model 1 incorporated control variables (demographic, objective economic, and objective health-related factors) and the main effect of subjective socioeconomic status. Second, Model 2 contained the main effect of social networks. Third, Model 3 included interaction terms to assess the moderating effect of social networks.
The results are indicated as follows. First, after controlling for objective sociodemographic and health-related variables, subjective socioeconomic status demonstrated the strongest and most consistent positive association with health status satisfaction across all models. Second, among the main effects of social networks, both social participation activities and the frequency of meetings with non-cohabiting children were significantly associated with increased health status satisfaction, whereas the frequency of contact was not statistically significant. Third, interaction analysis revealed significant negative interaction effects between subjective socioeconomic status and each of the three social network variables: social participation activities, frequency of contact, and meetings with non-cohabiting children. Although the interaction coefficients were negative, this pattern suggests a protective buffering effect. Robust social networks offered greater protection against health status dissatisfaction for individuals with low subjective socioeconomic status, while their incremental benefit was diminished among those with high subjective socioeconomic status. Thus, strong social networks mitigate the adverse health consequences of low subjective socioeconomic status and contribute to reducing socioeconomic status-related health disparities.
This study provides empirical evidence that social networks serve as critical protective factors against declines in health status satisfaction among middle-aged and older adults with low subjective socioeconomic status. Notably, participation in social activities and face-to-face interactions with non-cohabiting children were more effective than remote contact. These findings underscore the importance of social prescribing policies that promote intergenerational solidarity and community engagement, in addition to economic support, to address health inequalities in later life.
