Magnetic van der Waals materials with honeycomb lattices provide a fertile platform for exploring low-dimensional magnetism, topological electronic states, and their interplay. The combination between these materials and pressure, a clean tuning parameter, open opportunities to understand the fundamental physics in these materials and to discover exotic emergent orders. Among various emergent responses, the anomalous Hall effect from topological band degeneracies and ferromagnetic superconductivity are of particular interest, both for fundamental physics and for potential device application. In this thesis, I investigate how pressure modifies the crystal structure, magnetism, and electronic structure of two representative layered honeycomb materials, the ferrimagnetic nodal-line semiconductor Mn3Si2Te6 and the ferromagnetic semiconductor CrSiTe3, by combining high-pressure electronic transport, magnetization, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements using diamond anvil cells. These results provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing physical phenomena in these materials.
First, taking external pressure as a control knob, we show that while Mn3Si2Te6 exhibits the dome-shaped Curie temperature variation whose maximum reaches nearly room temperature at Pc~14 GPa, a metal-insulator transition, a spin-reorientation transition, and a structural modification occur concomitantly when the nodal-line state crosses the Fermi level at Pc. These unique pressure-driven structural, magnetic and electronic phase transitions of Mn3Si2Te6 originate from the interplay between the large spin-orbit coupling of the nodal-line state and the alignment of localized spins. Our findings highlight that the nodal-line states, isolated from other trivial states, can facilitate strongly tuning the magnetic properties in the topological magnets.
Second, we find that the large anomalous Hall effect emerges in a high-pressure metallic phase of CrSiTe3 while its honeycomb structure and ferromagnetism are maintained in a high-pressure regime. CrSiTe3 undergoes an insulator‒metal transition and a nearly concomitant increase of Curie temperature from ~33 to ~85 K at P1~6 GPa. Furthermore, the anomalous Hall conductivity appears from P1 and exhibits a dome-like pressure evolution, reaching a maximum of 35% of a quantized value at 10.4 GPa, 2 K. Especially, the anomalous Hall conductivity shows an unusual monotonic increase with decreasing temperature. Both the pressure- and temperature-dependence can be explained by the anomalous Hall effect from a gapped topologically non-trivial electronic band. Our results suggest that large anomalous Hall effect of CrSiTe3 arises from the intrinsic Berry curvature inherent to the non-trivial band topology of the pressure-induced ferromagnetic metallic states.
Finally, we observe the coexistence of the ferromagnetism and superconductivity in pressurized LixCrSiTe3 and CrSiTe3+x. While in LixCrSiTe3, electron-doped CrSiTe3, the superconductivity appears from 10.3 GPa and its upper critical field exceeds the Pauli limiting field, CrSiTe3+x, hole-doped CrSiTe3, show the superconductivity from 5.5 GPa whose upper critical field is much smaller than that of the electron-doped case. This indicates that the nature of the superconductivity in doped CrSiTe3 under high pressure depends on which atomic bands mainly contribute to conduction. Moreover, the hole-doped case exhibits a unique trend that the superconducting transition temperature increases in the pressure range where the Curie temperature also increases, which is contrary to the conventional understanding that superconductivity and ferromagnetism are incompatible with each other. Our findings suggest that doped CrSiTe3 is an intriguing platform for studying various types of the coexistence between the ferromagnetism and superconductivity.
