Tidal flats are highly dynamic coastal landforms that serve as critical buffers for sediment transport, flood mitigation, and ecosystem support. Their morphology is continuously reshaped by tides, waves, and sediment supply, so temporally dense monitoring is required to resolve deposition–erosion cycles and episodic adjustments that are often obscured in annual products. Traditional field surveys, while precise, are constrained by high costs and limited spatial coverage. Remote sensing provides a scalable alternative, but important challenges remain: optical imagery is constrained by cloud cover and inconsistent temporal availability, whereas Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is hindered by speckle noise, low contrast between wet intertidal surfaces and shallow water, and sensitivity to tidal-state-dependent roughness. These limitations restrict the automation, accuracy, and scalability of existing waterline-based Digital Elevation Model (DEM) generation methods.
To address these challenges, this study develops an automated multi-sensor intertidal monitoring framework that integrates Sentinel-1 (S-1) SAR and Sentinel-2 (S-2) optical imagery to generate high-frequency intertidal DEMs across 2018–2023. Waterline extraction is implemented using an entropy-optimized adaptive K-Means clustering algorithm, which automatically selects the optimal number of clusters by minimizing classification uncertainty. For SAR imagery, non-local speckle filtering and histogram equalization are applied to suppress noise and enhance contrast, while multi-scale edge features are incorporated to stabilize shoreline gradients under low-relief conditions. An automated masking step reduces offshore/ocean-dominated class imbalance and mitigates misclassification in low-contrast regions. For optical imagery, the AWEInsh index is adopted to improve land–water discrimination under diverse turbidity and background conditions. Validation against expert-interpreted references and UAV-derived shorelines indicates high waterline accuracy, with a mean F1 score of 0.88 and an average minimum distance (AMD) of 0.83 pixels.
Extracted waterlines are assigned tidal heights from nearby tide-gauge observations and then combined as elevation contours for DEM reconstruction using a finite-difference interpolation to produce smooth, hydrologically consistent surfaces. To reduce redundancy and interpolation artifacts caused by intersecting or near-duplicate contours, a structured waterline selection strategy is applied: (i) optical-derived waterlines are prioritized when available, and (ii) redundant lines at similar tidal heights are filtered using a class separability metric, retaining high-quality, non-overlapping constraints across the tidal range. The resulting DEMs are validated using RTK-UAV DEMs at both sites and TanDEM-X data for Gomso Bay (G-TDX), achieving a mean vertical MSE of 0.19 and a mean MAE of 0.33 m.
The framework is demonstrated at two geomorphologically distinct tidal flats on the west coast of South Korea—Gomso Bay and Hampyeong Bay—and produces a DEM time series. By converting each DEM into intertidal elevation volume, we construct time series for both bays that reveal consistent seasonal behaviour: net deposition in summer and net erosion in winter, with volume changes on the order of 10⁶ m3 per period, comparable to prior regional studies. Superimposed on this shared seasonal cycle, the two bays exhibit opposite long-term trends over 2018–2023: Gomso Bay shows net accretion of approximately 7×10⁶ m³ yr⁻¹, whereas Hampyeong Bay shows weak but persistent net erosion of about 6×10⁵ m³ yr⁻¹. Notably, both sites exhibit an anomalously low-amplitude fluctuation phase during 2022–2023, which is broadly consistent with muted variability in ERA5 monthly mean 10m wind speed, supporting a linkage between wind–wave forcing and sub-annual morphodynamic response.
In conclusion, this thesis shows that integrating SAR and optical imagery with an adaptive unsupervised clustering approach enables automated, high-frequency intertidal DEM reconstruction that resolves sub-annual dynamics while retaining multi-year trend information. The proposed framework is transferable to other tidal-flat systems and can support applications such as long-term morphodynamic assessment, shoreline-change analysis, and climate-adaptation planning.
