Aircraft in-flight icing induces rapid changes in aerodynamic characteristics and control response, thereby compromising flight safety. Accordingly, icing phenomena and associated risks must be evaluated and incorporated from preliminary design stages to mission planning under relevant meteorological conditions. However, the substantial cost and time required for flight tests and icing wind-tunnel experiments, coupled with constrained test conditions, hinder the comprehensive characterization of icing effects during the early design phase. To address these challenges, diverse numerical in-flight icing simulation tools have been developed. Nevertheless, most existing tools have been primarily validated for fixed-wing configurations, rendering them insufficient for capturing the complex, rotorcraft-specific icing physics.
Rotorcraft icing exhibits several distinctive characteristics. First, it is characterized by pronounced spatial three-dimensionality across the aerodynamic field, droplet dynamics, and surface ice accretion processes. Along the span, rotor blades simultaneously experience diverse flow regimes ranging from subsonic to transonic flow conditions. Furthermore, the blade-generated wake establishes highly three-dimensional inflow conditions for other rotorcraft components. Second, the rotational motion of the blades and their associated wake induce inherently unsteady icing conditions. In forward flight, the inflow velocity varies with the azimuth angle, causing the local icing environment near the blade surface to be time-dependent. Third, rotorcraft experience control-input variations during icing as aerodynamic degradation modifies the trimmed flight state. Rotor thrust is primarily regulated through the blade pitch angle and rotational speed. As ice accretion progresses, the rotorcraft adjusts its control inputs to compensate for performance losses. These adjustments, in turn, influence both the icing characteristics and the magnitude of performance degradation.
This dissertation proposes a high-fidelity quasi-steady and quasi-unsteady rotorcraft icing analysis framework that incorporates these complex rotorcraft physical phenomena. The framework is applied to two-dimensional airfoil and three-dimensional rotor-blade icing experiments to analyze rotor blade icing physics, icing-induced performance degradation, and the influence of control-input variations.
The main contributions of this study are summarized as follows :
Development and validation of a three-dimensional high-fidelity rotorcraft icing framework:
A comprehensive framework was developed and validated, consisting of a RANS/URANS based airflow solver, an Eulerian droplet solver, an ice accretion thermodynamics solver based on the Shallow Water Icing Model (SWIM), and a mesh-regeneration module incorporating a mass-conserving diffusion equation based surface smoothing method. The framework supports both quasi-steady and quasi-unsteady approaches, enabling computational efficiency while maintaining high fidelity depending on the analysis target and conditions. Notably, a Diagonalized Alternating Direction Implicit (DADI) method with implicit source term treatment was developed and integrated into the droplet solver to significantly enhance efficiency for quasi-unsteady computations. The developed solvers were rigorously validated using stationary and oscillating airfoils, as well as hovering and forward-flight rotor experiments and benchmark cases.
Analysis of the physical characteristics and aerodynamic impact of rotor-blade icing:
Rotor icing and performance degradation were analyzed under hovering and forward-flight conditions. Near the blade tip, aerodynamic heating reduces local ice accretion, while centrifugal effects and spanwise shear enhance water-film transport, leading to pronounced three-dimensional phase-change characteristics. The tip vortex from the preceding blade induces strong centrifugal effects on droplets, redistributing their trajectories and causing localized variations in impingement and ice accretion at specific azimuthal locations. This phenomenon establishes a rotorcraft specific three-dimensional icing mechanism. In forward flight, the location and strength of these vortex–droplet interactions vary with the azimuth angle. Combined with azimuth dependent inflow variations, these interactions render the airflow, droplet dynamics, and ice accretion processes highly unsteady. Notably, the maximum discrepancy in torque increase between fixed-pitch and trimmed variable-pitch states reached 58.4 pp. This amplification is driven by the non-linear coupling of ice-induced performance degradation and increased control input required to maintain thrust. These results quantitatively prove that incorporating realistic control responses is essential for the high-fidelity prediction of aerodynamic degradation and operational risks in rotorcraft icing environments.
This study develops a high-fidelity three-dimensional quasi-unsteady rotorcraft icing simulation framework and identifies the complex spatial and unsteady characteristics of rotor-blade icing. The results demonstrate that icing induced performance degradation is significantly amplified under constant-thrust operation. These findings underscore the necessity of maintaining constant-thrust conditions in rotorcraft in-flight icing analyses to avoid underestimating operational risks. The developed framework provides a robust foundation for establishing safe design and operational criteria for rotorcraft in icing environments.
