Existing scholarship on garden history and women’s literature exhibits two persistent biases. First, a geographic bias has privileged the Jiangnan region while marginalizing northern territories, thereby obscuring the distinctive formation logic of northern gardens shaped by specific material conditions, climatic constraints, and ritual frameworks. Second, an epistemic bias has centered male perspectives and documentary prose while discounting women’s modes of perception and affective expression, a tendency compounded by the lack of systematic, reproducible, data-driven analysis. Consequently, the intersection of “North–Women–Garden” remains an unresolved methodological and empirical gap.
This study employs Qing-dynasty women’s poetry as its primary corpus to reconstruct female modes of viewing and to elucidate the coupling logic between space and emotion in northern gardens. Its objectives are threefold: to identify the landscape elements, spatial structures, and affective color coding of northern gardens from a female perspective; to establish a transferable text-mining framework that integrates garden history, gender studies, and digital humanities; and to enhance the reliability of interdisciplinary research through quantifiable, visualized, and verifiable evidence chains. Using Gu Taiqing as a focal case, the study further examines the generative mechanisms and innovative expressions of women’s garden poetics.
Methodologically, the research synthesizes multiple computational techniques, including word-frequency analysis, collocation analysis, sentiment assessment, and chromatic terminology classification. The analytical workflow proceeds through text mining, natural language processing, LDA topic modeling, hierarchical clustering (Ward method), semantic network construction (Gephi), sentiment analysis (ROST CM6), and color-lexicon statistics. The macro-level corpus is drawn from The Imperial Gentlewomen’s Poems: Collection of Willow Catkins (《國朝閨秀詩柳絮集》), from which a northern subset was extracted through regional filtering (92 poets; 442 poems). The micro-level case consists of The Annotated Collection of Gu Taiqing (《顧太清集校箋》; 828 poems, including 335 ci lyrics). Typological sites—including Tianning Temple, Nanyu Tiantai Temple, Tanzhe Temple, Baiyunguan, Babaoshan, and Dongshan Thatched Hall—are employed to corroborate textual analysis with spatial characteristics and to strengthen spatiotemporal validity.
The principal findings are as follows. First, northern women’s gardens exhibit a four-layered imagery system comprising natural imagery (light sequences such as moon, sun, clouds, and clear water), water imagery (ponds, springs, rain, Jade Pool), architectural imagery (windows, curtains, railings, bridges, and pavilions), and ritual imagery (Jade Pool, Penglai, cranes, longevity motifs, and banquets). Together, these layers form a generative structure extending from perception to symbolism. Second, a dual innovation in viewing and scene construction is identified. Vertical viewing—such as climbing towers and gazing into the distance—appears significantly more prominent than horizontal viewing, while architectural thresholds (windows, curtains, railings, bridges, and pavilions) generate an “internal folding” mechanism that connects private studies with public landscapes. This enables a reversible transformation between interior and garden space and establishes “small scenery encompassing a large realm” as a key aesthetic principle. Third, the organization of landscape elements and their temporal sequencing constitutes an aesthetic coupling. Architectural elements range along a continuum from public to private, water features emphasize close-range, low-energy circulation adapted to the northern climate, and vegetal imagery assigns distinct affective and ethical values to plants such as willow, bamboo, plum blossom, and white crabapple. The pairing of willows and the moon further produces a temporal aesthetic balancing movement and stillness. Fourth, analysis of emotional and chromatic narratives indicates an overall mildly positive affective tone (approximately 89%), structured around phases of spring emergence and autumn harvest. A correspondence emerges between “cold scenery and warm events,” in which cool colors denote everyday landscapes, neutral tones encode moral order, and warm colors mark ritual and social occasions. Finally, the case of Gu Taiqing demonstrates a highly integrated semantic network linking light phases, water spaces, pavilions, and banquets, as well as a coherent system uniting mountains, springs, rocks, moss, bamboo, paths, and pavilions, evidencing a semantic transition from the mythic Jade Pool to secluded dwelling.
The study’s key contributions are twofold. Theoretically, it proposes the concepts of a four-layered imagery system, internal folding, and a chromatic method for women’s gardens, advancing analysis beyond descriptive inventories toward a generative framework integrating perception, narrative, and ritual. Methodologically, it constructs a comprehensive and transferable paradigm—spanning text mining, topic modeling, semantic networks, sentiment analysis, chromatic statistics, and field verification—that yields verifiable, comparable, and scalable digital-humanities evidence. Empirically, the research fills a dual gap by systematically elucidating both the northern context and the female perspective in garden history, while offering design implications for contemporary gender-friendly spaces, including chromatic strategies and micro-scale spatial interventions.
In sum, by adopting a data-driven humanistic approach, this dissertation reveals the generative logic of Qing-dynasty northern women’s gardens at both macroscopic (corpus-level mapping) and microscopic (site-based verification) scales. It highlights the roles of light as sequence, water as mirror, windows as thresholds, and propriety as meaning, coordinated through a chromatic mechanism in which cold scenery frames the setting, warm events structure social rhythm, and jade white signifies virtue. Beyond filling long-standing academic gaps, the study provides actionable insights for contemporary landscape and garden design informed by gender-sensitive perspectives.
