This study investigates online purchasing behavior through the theoretical framework of bounded rationality and cognitive load management. Analyzing session-level data from Taobao, the research demonstrates that purchase conversion is driven not by the total magnitude of search effort, but by the strategic allocation of attention and the mitigation of cognitive fatigue.
The findings reveal that the qualitative structure of search is critical: focused revisits within a category reduce uncertainty and enhance conversion, while frequent switching and high diversity impose choice overload. Furthermore, search duration exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship with conversion, reflecting cognitive fatigue thresholds that vary by temporal context, such as late-night or weekend sessions. Notably, ‘add-to-cart’ and ‘favorite’ actions serve as strategic anchors; although they may suppress immediate transactions, they function as external memory aids that preserve purchase intent for later conversion.
Practically, the findings suggest that e-commerce platforms can optimize user experience and commercial performance by facilitating focused browsing and implementing timely interventions based on detected fatigue signals.
