As underground development expands in the metropolitan area, large-scale sinkholes pose increasing risks to urban safety. Conventional geophysical methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), are effective for shallow imaging but limited in penetration depth and spatial coverage for detecting deep subsurface anomalies. In contrast, seismic approaches offer sufficient depth penetration and resolution to assess deep subsurface instability. The application of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) further improves their urban applicability through its high-density spatial sampling and operational efficiency.
To demonstrate these capabilities, a field-scale seismic survey was conducted at an active tunnel construction site in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. Both geophones and DAS were deployed along the tunnel axis, covering a survey length of approximately 250 m, to evaluate their applicability for detecting tunnel-scale subsurface anomalies that act as precursors to large urban sinkhole formation. Vibroseis sources with a frequency band of 5 -140 Hz were used for both sensing systems. Geophone data show strong Rayleigh-wave and S-wave energy related to the vertical direction. DAS emphasize P-wave-dominated horizontal motion because of its inherent ability to detect tangential strain to the fiber. These sensitivity contrasts necessitated preprocessing strategies proper to each sensor characteristic.
Reflection images obtained from DAS and geophone data clearly show subsurface reflectors near the tunnel crown at a depth of 10 m. Multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) identifies a low S-wave velocity anomaly at depths of 15 – 20 m along the tunnel. This anomaly indicates a velocity contrast between the reinforced tunnel structure and the natural overburden. Both DAS and geophone data yield consistent Vs sections, supporting the reliability of these results. The stacked section obtained through conventional data processing and MASW Vs profile confirm a stable and cross-validated subsurface response related to the tunnel. Three-dimensional modeling verifies tunnel-induced subsurface contrasts by reproducing key field observations. The match between synthetic and field data validates the physical response of the detected anomalies. The field experiment demonstrates that a hybrid seismic approach integrating DAS and geophones can effectively detect subsurface tunnel anomalies, even in noise-intensive metropolitan environments. The results show that seismic-based methods are viable for urban subsurface safety assessment and represent a foundational step toward the development of DAS-based monitoring technologies for underground construction and urban hazard mitigation.
Future research can further enhance imaging precision by incorporating several technical optimizations. First, while the straight fiber alignment used here is primarily sensitive to horizontal motion, adopting a helical fiber deployment would enable multidirectional sensing, capturing both vertical and horizontal components to resolve the complex characteristics of elastic waves. Second, although the current parallel survey configuration effectively identifies the presence of the tunnel, future investigations should employ perpendicular survey lines to obtain detailed cross-sectional profiles of the tunnel geometry and scale. Finally, extending the highest frequency of the vibroseis sweep signal from 140 Hz to 250 Hz would improve vertical resolution, enabling sharper delineation of tunnel boundaries and adjacent anomalous zones in the shallow subsurface. These enhancements will provide a more robust and comprehensive framework for seismic-based urban hazard mitigation and tunnel-scale monitoring.
