Declarative sentences are used to give information, while interrogative sentences are expressed to acquire it. Among interrogatives, tag questions are special in that they are not only expressed to ask for information, but also convey the bias of the speaker towards a particular answer. A tag question, which is composed of an anchor and a tag, is commonly used to express speaker bias. This thesis investigates how tag questions are used to express bias meaning. In particular, how do native speakers express original speaker bias and contextual evidence bias differently?
Numerous scholars have analyzed the bias in tag questions (Ladd, 1981; Buring & Gunlogson ,2000; Van Rooy & Safarova, 2003; Romero & Han 2004; Reese 2007; Krifka 2015; Malamud & Stephenson, 2015; Farkas & Roelofsen, 2017; AnderBois, 2019; Bill & Koev, 2023b). They have argued that the bias in tag questions is influenced by intonation, pause and polarity. However, there is little work that considers intonation, pause and polarity simultaneously. Moreover, it is unclear what kind of tag question native speakers of English will choose when there are two kinds of biases present. Finally, which tag question will they choose when these two kinds of biases are against each other (e.g. original bias supports p, while contextual bias supports ~p, or original bias supports ~p, while contextual evidence supports p)? This thesis addresses these questions.
A survey was conducted on native speakers of American English. Items in the survey consist of every combination of original speaker bias and contextual evidence bias. The results indicate that native speakers use different tag questions when there is only original speaker bias available and when there is only contextual evidence bias present. Moreover, the acceptability rating changes when there is another bias available. It indicates that the original speaker bias and contextual evidence bias both affect the use of tag questions.
This thesis provides a clearer description of the bias phenomenon in terms of the various tag questions, i.e. intonation, polarity and pause, and explains it through experiment. This thesis shows that native speakers use different kinds of tag questions when expressing different kinds of biases. More specifically, native speakers of English will choose postnuclear different polarity tag questions when the original bias is the only available bias. However, they tend to use different polarity tag questions. In other words, they will choose postnuclear different polarity rising, postnuclear different polarity falling, nuclear different polarity rising and nuclear different polarity falling tag questions. It also shows the interaction of two kinds of biases. Furthermore, when original bias and contextual evidence bias are supporting the same proposition, the postnuclear different polarity rising tag questions are the most natural ones. However, in the bias conflicting situations, the native speakers prefer same polarity tag questions.
