Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from combustion processes operating at elevated temperatures continue to pose serious risks to both the environment and human health, largely because thermal NOx formation increases sharply with temperature. In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, this study proposes a nitrogen-dilution-based oxidizer composition control strategy inspired by the operating principle of polymeric hollow-fiber membrane separation systems. By passively increasing the nitrogen fraction in the oxidizer while reducing the oxygen concentration, the proposed approach enables effective thermal NOx mitigation without requiring structural modifications to the burner or active feedback control.
Experiments were conducted using a premixed methane–air swirl burner operated at atmospheric pressure, with oxidizer composition systematically varied under three distinct test conditions. Nitrogen-enriched oxidizers were supplied to simulate membrane air separation, and NOx emissions were quantified using an electrochemical gas analyzer and expressed as emission indices (EINOx). Flame structure and reaction-zone characteristics were analyzed through CH* chemiluminescence imaging combined with the inverse Abel transform, enabling quantitative evaluation of flame volume and residence time.
The results show that, under constant fuel flow and thermal output, increasing nitrogen dilution significantly suppresses NOx formation, with a maximum reduction of approximately 45% in NOx concentration (ppm, corrected to 15% O₂) and 26% in EINOx at high nitrogen fractions. This reduction is primarily attributed to decreased oxygen concentration and lowered adiabatic flame temperature, which suppress thermal NOx formation governed by the Zeldovich mechanism. In contrast, experiments involving increased air flow exhibited non-monotonic NOx behavior due to competing effects of increased reactant concentration and temperature reduction. Under constant total oxidizer flow conditions, increased nitrogen fraction resulted in elongated flames and extended residence times, leading to a slight increase in NOx emissions despite minimal temperature change.
Overall, this work combines experimental observations with chemical kinetic analysis to clarify how nitrogen dilution influences flame geometry, residence time, and thermal NOx generation. The findings highlight the practicality and effectiveness of membrane-inspired oxidizer composition control as a simple and scalable NOx reduction strategy, offering strong potential for retrofit application in industrial burners and gas turbine combustion systems.
