Global surface temperature has increased steadily over recent decades in response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, regional surface air temperature (SAT) trends exhibit pronounced spatial and temporal inhomogeneity, particularly over the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude continents. In particular, the Eurasian continent have experienced strong decadal variability in winter SAT, including a significant cooling trend in the late twentieth century followed by an abrupt reversal to warming trend in the late 2000s. Understanding the physical origin of this decadal variability is essential for separating internal climate variability from externally forced responses in regional climate change. This dissertation investigates the nature and mechanisms of Eurasian winter SAT variability and its recent trend reversal using observations, reanalysis data, multi-model large ensemble simulations, and model experiments.
Observational analyses reveal a pronounced zonally asymmetric winter SAT trend during 1988–2009, characterized by cooling over central Eurasia and warming over northeastern North America and Greenland. This pattern reversed abruptly after 2009. The decadal reversal is closely associated with a phase shift of the Arctic Oscillation (AO), rather than being solely explained by the Warm Arctic–Cold Eurasia (WACE) pattern. A surface energy budget analysis demonstrates that downward longwave radiation, modulated by AO-related temperature and moisture advection, is the dominant thermodynamic driver of the observed temperature trends, while sensible heat flux plays a secondary role over central Eurasia.
The contribution of internal climate variability to the Eurasian winter cooling is further assessed using multi-model large ensemble simulations from the late 1980s to the late 2000s. The simulations exhibit a wide spread in Eurasian winter SAT trends, with an ensemble mean close to zero, indicating that the observed cooling represents a rare realization of internal climate variability rather than a direct response to anthropogenic forcing. Ensemble members reproducing the cooling trend feature tropospheric deep Arctic warming, weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex, and enhanced tropical convection over the western Pacific. For example, this intensified tropical convection deepens the Aleutian low through poleward-propagating Rossby waves, thereby reinforcing the circulation anomalies favorable for Eurasian cooling.
The dynamical mechanisms governing the subsequent trend reversal are elucidated by examining North Atlantic climate variability. Decadal variability of the North Atlantic jet, driven by subpolar sea surface temperature (SST) variability, emerges as a key dynamical source. During the Eurasian cooling period, subpolar North Atlantic warming weakened the meridional SST gradient, leading to jet deceleration and enhanced upper-tropospheric convergence over the Greenland–Norwegian Seas. Nonlinear stationary wave model experiments confirm that this upper-tropospheric convergence acts as a local Rossby wave source, exciting a downstream wave train that promotes Eurasian cooling. After the late 2000s, cooling of the subpolar North Atlantic SST strengthened the meridional SST gradient and re-accelerated the jet, contributing to the reversal toward Eurasian warming in combination with the background anthropogenic warming signal. The essential role of the subpolar North Atlantic SST for the North Atlantic jet-related mechanisms is also supported by fully-coupled climate model experiments, prescribing the observed SST trend pattern.
Overall, this dissertation demonstrates that the decadal variability and the recent reversal of the Eurasian winter SAT trend are predominantly governed by internal climate variability operating through interconnected pathways involving AO-related circulation changes, tropical Pacific convection, and North Atlantic jet dynamics. These results provide a physically consistent framework for interpreting regional SAT variability on interannual-to-decadal timescales and underscore the necessity of explicitly accounting for internal climate variability when assessing and projecting regional climate change.
