Scientific knowledge serves as a foundational source of technological innovation by generating new ideas and shaping the direction of technological development. However, its effects are not uniform; rather, the extent and form of its influence vary across technological, industrial, and organizational contexts. This heterogeneity emerges because different environments enable or require distinct modes of knowledge recombination. Even within the same technological domain, structurally divergent patterns of knowledge integration can arise, yielding different innovation outcomes. In particular, a clear structural contrast exists between core technological domains, where knowledge recombination is concentrated and cohesive, and application-oriented or diffusion domains, where heterogeneous recombination is more prevalent. This study conceptualizes these two structural domains as core and brokerage technologies and investigates how the innovation effects of scientific knowledge differ depending on a technology’s structural position. Through this approach, the study seeks to uncover generalizable mechanisms of science-driven innovation that extend beyond specific technological or industrial contexts.
The transformation of scientific knowledge into technological innovation can be empirically observed in the linkage between patents and scientific publications, particularly when patents cite scientific articles. Leveraging this citation-based connection, the study examines science-to-technology interactions using artificial intelligence (AI) as the empirical setting. AI represents a paradigmatic case in which scientific knowledge is rapidly translated into algorithms, models, and systems that deliver major technological advances. Despite the recent surge of progress, AI faces persistent challenges, including implementation lag, computational bottlenecks, and increasing burden of knowledge. These challenges highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of the conditions and mechanisms under which innovation emerges. Moreover, AI is characterized by the simultaneous expansion of core technologies and diffusion into adjacent domains, accompanied by active knowledge recombination. This makes the distinction between core and brokerage technologies especially salient. Accordingly, this study combines AI patents filed between 2002 and 2021 with the scientific publications they cite to examine how scientific knowledge is recombined within core and brokerage technologies and how these processes shape innovation outcomes. The analysis spans three levels: the technological knowledge structure, the patent level, and the organizational level.
The first essay analyzes how the patterns of knowledge interaction that transform scientific knowledge into AI technologies differ depending on technological structural positions. Using network centrality measures, AI technologies are classified into core and brokerage categories. Semantic topic modeling (BERTopic) and generative AI–based topic labeling are applied to the abstracts of patents and scientific articles to compare topical structures and develop a typology of science-to-technology knowledge flows. The results show that core technologies tend to directly embed scientific concepts into technological knowledge, whereas brokerage technologies rely more selectively on scientific knowledge, drawing from it when necessary to meet technological demands.
The second essay investigates which types of innovation arise at the patent level when core and brokerage technologies draw on scientific knowledge. The degree of science-based knowledge is measured through the semantic similarity between patent abstracts and the abstracts of their cited scientific publications, while structural positions are quantified using network analysis. Patent bibliographic data are used to assess disruptive and diversity-oriented innovation. Regression analyses reveal that stronger reliance on scientific knowledge increases the likelihood of disruptive innovation within core technologies. In contrast, in brokerage technologies, scientific knowledge is associated with reduced technological diversity. These findings demonstrate that the effects of scientific knowledge on innovation outcomes depend on a technology’s structural position in the knowledge network.
The third essay extends the analysis to the firm level by examining whether a firm’s technological structural capability mediates the relationship between its use of scientific knowledge in patenting and its generation of technological novelty. Firms’ reliance on scientific knowledge is measured through semantic similarity between their patents and their cited scientific articles. Technological structural capability is assessed by the distribution of patents across CPC classes weighted by network centrality, and technological novelty is evaluated by detecting the emergence of new CPC classes in firm-level patent portfolios. The results indicate that the innovation-enhancing effects of scientific knowledge vary according to firms’ structural positions. Firms concentrated in core technologies achieve technological novelty at both the firm and industry levels when leveraging scientific knowledge, whereas brokerage-oriented firms predominantly realize novelty within the firm rather than at the industry level.
Overall, this dissertation proposes an integrated analytical framework for understanding science-based technological innovation. It advances existing perspectives by showing that the interaction between scientific knowledge and technological development does not operate under uniform conditions but unfolds through differentiated processes shaped by structural positions in the technological knowledge network. The findings contribute to the literature on knowledge recombination, absorptive capacity, and science-based innovation by emphasizing that the innovative value of scientific knowledge depends on how it is recombined and strategically embedded within technological and organizational structures. Substantively, the study offers practical insights for firms and policymakers seeking to enhance innovation outcomes by aligning the use of scientific knowledge with technological structural positions, particularly in rapidly evolving domains such as artificial intelligence.
