The pursuit of sustainable chemistry has emerged as one of the defining challenges of modern science. With mounting concerns over climate change, environmental degradation, and finite resource availability, the chemical community is under increasing pressure to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and transition toward greener methodologies. Traditional organic synthesis, which has historically relied on homogeneous catalysis or stoichiometric reagents, often produces large amounts of by-products and requires energy-intensive processes. Consequently, strategies that minimize environmental footprints while maintaining synthetic versatility are urgently needed. In this regard, heterogeneous catalysis has gained tremendous momentum as a central pillar of sustainable chemistry.
Heterogeneous catalysts, defined as catalytic materials existing in a phase distinct from the reactants, typically solids interacting with liquid or gaseous substrates, offer unique advantages. They provide high durability, recyclability, and the potential for integration into continuous flow systems. Moreover, the structural and electronic tunability of heterogeneous materials allows for rational design, enabling tailored selectivity for specific transformations. Accordingly, this dissertation focuses on the design of heterogeneous catalysts through controlled modulation of their structural and electronic properties and the evaluation of sustainable methodologies for organic synthesis.
Chapter 1 presents a detailed overview of the research background and outlines the aims of this dissertation, incorporating fundamental aspects of heterogeneous catalysis.
Chapter 2 elucidates visible-light absorbing photocatalyst carbon nitride (CN). We developed a copper-doped carbon nitride catalyst (Cu/CN) capable of promoting the generation of hydroperoxyl radicals (•OOH) as the principal reactive oxidants, thereby enabling oxidation under conditions completely free from H2O2 formation via the Fenton pathway. This system exhibits remarkable selectivity for the oxidation of thiols into disulfides, in contrast to conventional heterogeneous photocatalysts that commonly produce undesired overoxidized byproducts such as thiosulfinates and thiosulfonates. The unique ability of Cu/CN to regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, combined with its broad substrate applicability and excellent recyclability, establishes it as a sustainable and highly selective platform for photocatalytic oxidation of organic molecules.
Chapter 3 describes the development of heterogeneous thermal catalysts for the transformation of biomass-derived compounds. A range of molybdenum oxide–doped silica catalysts (MoOx/SiO2) were synthesized and applied to diamide dehydration, representing the first demonstration of this reaction using a heterogeneous catalyst. Detailed structural investigations of the molybdenum species were carried out to elucidate the relationship between MoOx and the silica support.
