Electrochemical environments can fundamentally alter the thermodynamic and kinetic pathways of microstructural evolution in metallic systems. This dissertation establishes a unified framework that elucidates how electrochemical charge accumulation and hydrogen ionization collectively drive martensitic transformation in metastable austenitic stainless steels. By integrating electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), finite-element electrochemical modeling, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this work reveals that electrochemically induced transformations arise from charge-mediated elastic instabilities rather than from conventional mechanical or thermal stimuli.
The first study identifies an unexpected anodic martensitic transformation occurring during electrochemical polishing (EP) of 16Cr–5Ni austenitic stainless steel. Despite the absence of external stress or hydrogen charging, surface-localized α′ martensite was detected, increasing with applied voltage and EP duration. Combined AFM-resolved FEM simulations and first-principles calculations demonstrated that surface charge accumulation produces localized tensile stress fields exceeding the critical stress for transformation, thereby establishing electrochemical charging as a new mechanical activation route for phase transformation.
The second study extends this finding by quantifying how surface roughness and austenite stability control the transformation kinetics. Specimens with rougher surfaces exhibited higher martensite fractions, attributed to enhanced charge build-up at surface asperities. FEM simulations revealed that the electrostatic potential gradient scales with surface curvature, while Thermo-Calc-based thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the electrochemical driving force parallels that of stress-induced transformation. These results define a quantitative relationship linking morphology, charge density, and transformation rate.
The third study investigates hydrogen-cation-induced martensitic transformation during cathodic charging under an external magnetic field. By exploiting the Lorentz force to distinguish charged from neutral hydrogen, directional gradients in martensite fraction and hardness were observed, verifying the cationic (H⁺) nature of mobile hydrogen. FEM and DFT analyses revealed that hydrogen cations generate internal stresses surpassing the mechanical threshold for martensitic nucleation when the H⁺ fraction exceeds approximately 50%, providing quantitative evidence for charge-dependent electro-mechanical coupling.
Collectively, these studies uncover the electrochemical origin of martensitic transformation and establish hydrogen polarity as a decisive factor governing transformation behavior. The integrated insights advance the fundamental understanding of electro-mechanical coupling in metallic systems and offer a theoretical basis for designing electrochemically and magnetically controllable phase transformations.
