The pursuit of high-energy-density batteries beyond commercial lithium ion batteries has driven intensive research into lithium metal batteries (LMBs), which harness the exceptionally high specific capacity (3860 mAh g−1) and low redox potential (−3.04 vs. the standard hydrogen electrode) of lithium (Li) metal anodes. However, the practical realization of LMBs remains constrained by the instability of conventional electrolytes that induce parasitic reactions at both the Li metal anode and high-voltage cathode, especially during long-term storage and high-voltage operation. Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have emerged as a promising class of electrolytes that combine the interfacial stability of highly concentrated electrolytes with the favorable physicochemical properties of diluted systems. Yet, intrinsic challenges—such as the existence of free solvent molecules and the reliance on reactive fluorinated diluents—still hinder their long-term stability and commercial viability. This dissertation presents two complementary electrolyte-engineering strategies to address these limitations through rational solvation structure design and solvent engineering.
In Chapter 2, a hierarchical solvation structure design is introduced to suppress the generation of free solvent molecules in ternary-LHCEs (ter-LHCEs). Incorporating a weakly solvating fluorinated cosolvent, 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-2-(trifluoromethyl)propane (HFMTFP), into the conventional binary-LHCEs(bi-LHCEs), composed of a strong solvating solvent (1,2-dimethoxy ethane, DME) and a non-coordinating fluorinated diluent (bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether, BTFE), leads to an energetically hierarchical solvation structure. This structure effectively retains DME within the Li+ solvation sheath, thereby minimizing solvent exchange and enhancing the oxidative stability during high-voltage operation. Furthermore, the coexistence of coordinated and free HFMTFP facilitates the formation of inorganic-rich interphases at both the Li metal anode and nickel-rich cathode, ensuring balanced interfacial stability.
In Chapter 3, a weakly solvating solvent strategy is proposed by employing 1,2-dimethoxypropane (DMP) as the primary solvent in LHCEs to mitigate both oxidative and corrosive degradation during calendar aging. The methyl substitution at the α-hydrogen suppress the oxidative decomposition of DMP on high-Ni cathodes, thereby minimizing transition-metal dissolution and subsequent cathode-to-anode crosstalk. In addition, the weakly solvating nature of DMP promotes the formation of an inorganic-rich interphase on the Li metal and—together with the reduced reliance on fluorinated diluent—effectively prevents Li metal corrosion under open-circuit condition. As a result, LMBs incorporating the-DMP based LHCE exhibit outstanding capacity retention during prolonged calendar-aging conditions.
Overall, this dissertation establishes a comprehensive electrolyte design framework that bridges solvation chemistry and interfacial engineering to achieve stable LMBs. By integrating hierarchical solvation structure control and weakly solvating solvent strategies, the presented studies demonstrate how manipulating local solvation environments can simultaneously suppress oxidative and corrosive degradation. These findings provide fundamental insights and practical guidelines for the development of long-life, high-energy LMBs.
