There has been renewed interest in aqueous metal anode batteries as safer and more cost-effective alternatives to Li-ion batteries. Among them, aqueous Sn-ion batteries (ASIBs) are attractive because Sn metal offers high specific capacity and can operate in acidic electrolytes over a relatively wide voltage window. However, in aqueous media, temperature-dependent interfacial reactions and metal growth behavior affect morphology and performance. Accordingly, elucidating these temperature-dependent interfacial and growth processes is essential for enabling ASIBs that operate reliably over a broad temperature range. In this thesis, the temperature-dependent plating, stripping, and corrosion behavior of Sn metal in acidic aqueous electrolytes is investigated. Symmetric Sn cells are cycled at 0 °C, 25 °C, and 60 °C at current densities of 1 and 10 mA cm-2, followed by morphological characterization and complementary corrosion tests. At 0 °C, sluggish ionic transport is accompanied by highly non-uniform stripping and pit formation. Subsequent growth of Sn metal localizes at pit rims and edges, producing a rough surface with dendrites. At 25 °C, stripping generates large pits whose depth and width depend on current density. The pits are deep and narrow at low current density, and shallow and wide at high current density. During plating, polyhedral deposits form mainly in the electrode center, whereas dendrites are preferentially observed at the electrode edges. At 60 °C, stripping proceeds more uniformly in a layer-by-layer manner along grain boundaries and grain surfaces, resulting in a smooth and homogeneous morphology. Subsequent plating produces uniform Sn deposition and effectively suppresses dendrite formation during cycling. However, elevated temperature also accelerates corrosion. Both the corrosion potential and the corrosion current density increase, and pitting emerges on electrodes left at rest while immersed in the electrolyte. Overall, the results clarify how temperature governs Sn metal morphology and corrosion in aqueous electrolytes. They further identify operating conditions that favor reversible Sn cycling and highlight the trade-offs associated with operation at elevated temperature. These results are expected to inform the design of ASIBs capable of stable operation over a wide temperature range.
