This study aims to investigate how the Maximum Acceptable Latency (MAL) in mobile-based conversational agent environments varies depending on the characteristics of user queries. Previous HCI and HF/E research has largely measured changes in satisfaction or trust under fixed response-delay conditions, with limited quantitative examination of how users’ latency tolerance changes according to the properties of the query itself. To address this gap, the present study empirically analyzes the effects of information load (time range and number of data sources) and cognitive processing level (based on Bloom’s Taxonomy) on MAL. A total of 256 queries reflecting realistic mobile usage contexts were developed, and MAL data were collected through an Incomplete Block Design in which 80 participants each evaluated 32 queries, yielding 2,560 observations. Participants indicated the point at which they felt they could no longer wait for a response, and these values were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model (LMM). The results showed that information load significantly increased MAL at high levels of time range and number of data sources, while cognitive processing level exhibited an increase in MAL at the medium level. Rather than showing uniform and independent main effects, MAL varied substantially depending on specific combinations of query characteristics, and multiple two-way interaction effects were identified. In particular, MAL increased markedly when a wide time range was combined with a large number of data sources, and when high temporal scope co-occurred with elevated cognitive processing demands. Although the explanatory power of fixed effects alone was limited, the conditional explanatory power including individual differences was relatively high, indicating that MAL is shaped by both query characteristics and users’ inherent tolerance tendencies. Additionally, exploratory visualizations revealed a pattern in which MAL increased most sharply when all three factors were simultaneously high; however, this pattern was interpreted descriptively rather than through formal statistical inference. These findings suggest that users infer the AI’s processing burden from the informational and cognitive cues embedded in the query and accordingly justify longer response delays. By moving beyond the conventional assumption that faster responses are always optimal, this study proposes a dynamic and context-dependent conceptualization of MAL that varies with query characteristics. From a practical perspective, the results highlight the importance of query-specific latency design strategies that adapt response timing to the informational and cognitive demands of each query, enabling more efficient use of computational resources while maintaining or enhancing user experience in conversational AI services.
