This study investigated how background knowledge influences Korean EFL learners' inference generation in scientific expository texts, with a focus on their online cognitive processes using the think-aloud method. Fifty-two undergraduate and graduate students with advanced language proficiency participated in the study, all of whom satisfied stringent English proficiency criteria to ensure linguistic homogeneity and to examine the isolated contribution of background knowledge to reading comprehension. Two expository texts in biology and chemistry were employed to represent distinct topics and text difficulty levels, with participants' background knowledge assessed through a pretest to classify them into the high- and low-background-knowledge groups. During individual think-aloud sessions, participants verbalized their thoughts while reading, and the resulting verbal protocols were transcribed, segmented, and qualitatively analyzed using MAXQDA Analytics Pro. The think-aloud data were initially categorized into inferential and non-inferential responses, and inferential responses were further coded into specific inference types including bridging, invalid bridging, elaborative, invalid elaborative, and predictive inferences.
Quantitative analyses were conducted with beta regression models and a Bayesian multinomial mixed-effects model. Background knowledge emerged as the primary predictor of inference quantity, quality, and types, with text difficulty having no significant effect. Beta regression model results revealed that the low-background-knowledge (LBK) group generated a greater quantity of inferences that were less accurate and more fragmented, reflecting compensatory processing. In contrast, the high-background-knowledge (HBK) group produced fewer but more accurate and conceptually coherent inferences, along with a higher proportion of non-inferential responses, suggesting more efficient comprehension. Bayesian model results indicated that the HBK group was more likely to produce elaborative inferences, while the LBK group relied more heavily on bridging inferences, and predictive inferences occurred infrequently in both groups due to the nature of expository texts.
Complementary qualitative case analyses highlighted a striking contrast in participants' inferencing within the same sentences. The HBK group successfully integrated their prior knowledge to generate valid elaborative inferences, while the LBK group produced invalid bridging inferences due to their limited background knowledge of scientific concepts. Collectively, these findings demonstrated that background knowledge critically determines the quantity, quality, and types of inferences in processing expository texts. From a pedagogical perspective, this study underscores the importance of activating readers' background knowledge prior to reading, selecting reading materials that appropriately balance linguistic and conceptual demands, and incorporating think-aloud instruction to promote metacognitive awareness of inference strategies.
