Food choice is shaped not only by product attributes or situational factors but also by consumers’ underlying beliefs about the relationship between the eater and food. This research develops and applies a belief-based measurement model to examine how eater–food relationship beliefs systematically influence food choice across multiple contexts. Drawing on prior conceptualizations, three belief constructs are proposed: Food as Toy, Food as Fuel, and Food as Guardian, reflecting sensory enjoyment, energy provision, and health-protective functions of food, respectively. A multi-stage research design is employed. Study 1 develops and validates a measurement model for eater–food relationship beliefs using exploratory factor analysis. Study 2 applies this model to three years of grocery receipt data, examining how beliefs are reflected in actual purchasing behavior across food categories. Study 3 extends the analysis to social contexts by investigating food gift selection preferences using an online experiment. Study 4 examines the mechanisms through which these beliefs shape purchase intentions for a new food product with functional attributes, testing a belief–attitude–intention pathway. The results demonstrate that eater–food relationship beliefs exert consistent yet category-specific effects across contexts. Food as Toy beliefs are associated with hedonic and sensory-oriented choices, Food as Fuel beliefs predict selections emphasizing energy provision and functional utility, and Food as Guardian beliefs guide health-oriented choices while constraining less healthy options. Overall, this research advances food choice theory by introducing a relational, belief-based perspective and provides practical insights for food marketing and product development.

Food as Toy, Food as Fuel, Food as Guardian의 세 가지 구성개념으로 제안하며, 이는 각각 음식의 감각적 즐거움, 에너지 공급 기능, 건강 보호 기능을 반영한다.
