The urban environmental impact of tall buildings has increasingly become an important topic of investigation, with the rapid pace of tall-building constructions around the world. In this study, the effects of a tall building on pedestrian-level flow and pollutant dispersion are investigated using the parallelized large-eddy simulation model (PALM). Numerical simulations are conducted by changing the tall-building height in the configuration of a tall building surrounded by low-rise cubical buildings. As the tall-building height increases, the time- and area-averaged pedestrian-level wind speed increases, while the pollutant concentration decreases. Both the rates of change in the average wind speed and pollutant concentration decrease with increasing tall-building height. The trend of the average wind speed is attributable to an increasing tendency of oncoming flows to pass by the sides of the tall building rather than going down as the tall-building height increases. The trend of the average pollutant concentration is associated with that of the average wind speed. Instantaneous flow and pollutant dispersion are also analyzed. In the upstream region of the tall building, bulks of polluted air are repeatedly transported from further upstream regions and enter the canyon right in front of the tall building, temporarily increasing the pedestrian-level pollutant concentration near the windward wall of the tall building. In the downstream region of the tall building, at the pedestrian level, two counter-rotating vortices appear in the canyon just behind the tall building. Each of these vortices repeatedly develops at one of the two leeward corners of the tall building, moves downstream while changing its size, and disappears after reaching the windward wall of the neighboring low-rise building. These coherent vortices considerably affect the spatiotemporal variation of pedestrian-level pollutant concentration in the canyon just behind the tall building.
In built-up urban areas, there are numerous buildings of various shapes and heights, and their collective impacts on urban flow and air quality are of great concern. In the present study, the impacts of building-height variability on turbulent coherent structures above an array of square buildings and pollutant dispersion are numerically examined using PALM. Three simulations are conducted: no building-height variability case (σ/Have = 0, where σ is the standard deviation of building heights and Have is the average building height), small building-height variability case (σ/Have = 0.25), and large building-height variability case (σ/Have = 0.5). In the latter two cases, buildings of two different heights are alternately arranged. Pollutants are released from street level. As the building-height variability increases, the average pedestrian-level pollutant concentration decreases and its spatial variability becomes large. The building-height variability greatly influences turbulence intensity and vertical turbulent momentum and pollutant fluxes. The streamwise-elongated low- and high-speed flow structures appear in all three cases, and they are wider in the spanwise direction when there is building-height variability. Strong turbulent fluctuations seem to affect the spanwise extension of the high- and low-speed flow structures. Quadrant analysis shows that stronger ejection and sweep events are more frequent with increasing building-height variability. The regions of ejection (sweep) coincide well with those of pollutant ejection (pollutant sweep). When there is building-height variability, the streaky structures that appear also in the fields of instantaneous vertical turbulent momentum flux are somewhat wider in the spanwise direction.
As rapid urbanization increases building density, understanding optimal building configurations to mitigate urban environmental problems is crucial for sustainable development. This study investigates how dense high-rise building arrays affect airflow and pollutant dispersion under solar radiation using PALM. Nine simulations with varying plan area densities (0.04, 0.16, and 0.64) and building heights (80, 160, and 240 m) were conducted to analyze thermal and flow characteristics. Mixed-layer height increases primarily with building height at night but with plan area density during the day. In densely packed tall buildings, neighboring structures obstruct solar radiation, concentrating turbulence development near the tops of buildings rather than at street level. This enhances upward pollutant transport aloft while suppressing near-surface mixing below. Consequently, the thermally stable layer persists during daytime, leading to poor air quality and pollutant accumulation within the building canopy after sunrise. This suppressed mixing can result in in-canopy pollutant concentrations that are up to approximately three times higher in dense tall-building areas than in equally dense low-rise areas, establishing a pollutant-storage regime when high canopy aspect ratios limit solar penetration. These findings highlight the need to avoid excessive clustering of high-rise buildings in urban planning to prevent air quality deterioration and provide quantitative guidance for sustainable urban design.
