Ensuring the structural integrity of bridges is a critical endeavor for public safety and the economic efficiency of infrastructure management. However, current bridge crack management practices remain heavily reliant on subjective visual inspections and analog, 2D drawing-based reporting. These traditional methods suffer from low data reliability and fragmented workflows, which fundamentally hinder effective collaboration among stakeholders.
To address these challenges, this study proposes a data-centric Digital Twin-based collaborative XR platform that integrates sensor-based real-time detection, Augmented Reality (AR)-based precise inspection, and Virtual Reality (VR)-based multi-user decision-making into a unified architecture. An empirical analysis involving 156 practitioners revealed that current methods suffer from low reliability ratings, failing to reach 3.0 out of 5.0, and an average delay of 1.7 days in the decision-making process caused by the necessity of manual data reinterpretation.
The developed platform standardizes the lifecycle of maintenance data by linking sensor outputs and AR-based 'Draw-to-BIM' technology to a central database. Validation results demonstrate that the platform upwardly equalizes information reliability across job roles to over 80% by providing high-fidelity 3D spatial context data. Furthermore, it achieves significant process optimization by immediately eliminating the 1.7-day decision-making latency through real-time data synchronization. The study also identifies the lack of surrounding environmental information as the primary driver for redundant site re-visits and proves that XR’s real-scale visualization can physically substitute for these visits, effectively overcoming spatiotemporal constraints.
In conclusion, by transforming analog and sequential processes into a digital, real-time collaboration system, this research provides a practical framework that enhances the accuracy and efficiency of bridge crack management and establishes a foundation for future smart infrastructure maintenance.
